LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced on Saturday the appointment of former Test captain Mohammad Yousuf as the head coach of the Pakistan U19 cricket team. Yousuf, a highly esteemed figure in Pakistani cricket, will be taking on his new role with immediate effect.

One of the first tasks for Yousuf in his new capacity will be overseeing the team's participation in the 2023 ACC U19 Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in the UAE from 8 to 17 December. Following this, the team will set its sights on the 2024 ICC U19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, which is slated to be held from 13 January to 4 February.

Yousuf brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role, having previously served as the batting coach of the Pakistan Men’s Team and worked at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. As one of Pakistan’s most distinguished batters, Yousuf had an illustrious playing career spanning from 1998 to 2010. He holds the record for the most Test runs in a calendar year, amassing 1788 runs in 2006, and has accumulated a total of 7,530 Test and 9,720 ODI runs.

Expressing his pleasure at the new role, Yousuf stated, “I am pleased to join as Pakistan U19 head coach and feel honoured to have been given the opportunity to contribute to Pakistan cricket by Chairman PCB Management Committee Zaka Ashraf."

He further added, “Having had the privilege of working with the senior men’s side, I will bring my coaching experience to the U19 set-up, providing a nurturing environment for the young talents to thrive and make a mark on the international level. Harnessing the skills of young players is crucial for Pakistan cricket, and I am dedicated to fulfilling my responsibility in helping identify, improve, and nurture future stars.” With Yousuf's leadership, the PCB aims to enhance the development of young talents and create a pathway for them to succeed at the highest level of the sport.
