In a notable move toward expanding Pakistan’s international sporting connections, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Washington, underscoring Pakistan’s growing ambitions in global sports beyond cricket.

A warm welcome extended to FIFA chief

Sharing details of the meeting via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Naqvi described the exchange as “excellent,” highlighting the rapidly growing popularity of football in Pakistan, particularly among the nation’s youth.

Naqvi revealed that he extended a “warm invitation” to FIFA President Infantino to visit Pakistan, an offer which Infantino graciously accepted, promising a visit in the near future.

The meeting is seen as a symbolic step toward strengthening ties between global football leadership and Pakistan’s evolving sports ecosystem, which has long been cricket-centric.

"Football is gaining remarkable traction, especially in urban areas where a passionate fanbase continues to grow," Naqvi said.

Pakistan football rebuilding its global standing

Pakistan’s football journey has been turbulent over the years, marred by administrative conflicts and FIFA suspensions due to political interference. However, in recent times, focused normalization efforts, improved governance, and international support have paved the way for a renewed sense of optimism.

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Pakistan’s leadership is keen to use the moment to strengthen its international football ties and create fresh opportunities for the sport’s growth at home.

Naqvi applauds Pakistan hockey team’s historic win

In addition to his international engagements, Mohsin Naqvi also took time to congratulate Pakistan’s hockey team for securing a spot in the final of the FIH Nations Cup.

Pakistan advanced to the final after a thrilling semi-final victory over France, a win Naqvi praised as a result of "excellent teamwork and outstanding performance on the field."

Naqvi extended his congratulations to both the players and the team management, expressing hope that Pakistan will continue its winning momentum and bring the tournament trophy home.

"Good news is coming for Pakistan not only in sports but in every field. I hope the Pakistan hockey team will also win the final and return home victorious," he added.

Bridging sports for national pride

Mohsin Naqvi’s recent engagements — from meeting the head of world football to celebrating the triumphs of Pakistan’s hockey team — reflect a broader vision to promote sports unity and excellence across disciplines. His leadership signals an intention to build cross-sport connections, elevate international exposure, and inspire Pakistan’s athletes on a global stage.

As Pakistan’s sporting community looks forward to hosting international football figures and cheering on the hockey team in the Nations Cup final, it’s clear that the country’s sporting narrative is steadily evolving beyond cricket — and it’s a story that’s just beginning to unfold.
