Shaheen sets
sights on Big Bash glory, targets Warner, Babar, and Smith showdowns
Asher Butt
Pakistan’s
star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi is gearing up for an electrifying season in the
Big Bash League (BBL), and he’s not holding back on his ambitions. Speaking on
The Surge Podcast hosted by former Australian captain Aaron Finch, Afridi
shared his excitement, goals, and the fierce battles he’s looking forward to on
Australian soil.
First over
magic: A trademark he plans to continue
Afridi,
renowned for his ability to strike early, made it clear he’s aiming to bring
his signature skill to the BBL as well.
"I wish
to maintain my tradition of taking a wicket in the first over in the Big Bash
as well," he confidently stated.
The left-arm
speedster is already setting up some of the tournament’s most anticipated
duels, declaring that his hit list includes Babar Azam, David Warner, and Steve
Smith.
"I’ll
try to get all three — not just one," he said with a playful grin.
Respect for
Warner, but no room for mercy
While Afridi
holds deep admiration for Australian batting legend David Warner, calling him
"a legendary player and a very good human being," the respect won’t
soften his on-field approach.
"Playing
against him is always a challenge, but if I get his wicket, that moment will be
special for me," Afridi remarked, hinting at a thrilling contest when the
two face off.
Embracing
the Australian challenge
Afridi is
equally thrilled about the unique cricketing atmosphere in Australia and the
fast, bouncy tracks that have historically favored pace bowlers.
"The
Big Bash is always a challenging league; the bouncy pitches in Australian
grounds help fast bowlers," he noted.
He
specifically highlighted his eagerness to bowl at The Gabba, Brisbane’s iconic
venue known for its pace and bounce — and its reputation as a fortress for
Australian cricket.
"I wish
that when I run in to bowl at the Gabba, the fans chant ‘Shaheen Afridi’,"
he mused. Afridi also recalled Mitchell Johnson’s legendary spells at the
Gabba, moments that have inspired his own bowling dreams.
More than
just cricket
For Afridi,
the BBL offers more than just tough cricket. He’s looking forward to soaking in
the Australian culture and the rich experience of playing in one of the world’s
most vibrant T20 leagues.
"I will
get an opportunity to learn a new culture in the BBL; the Gabba is a fantastic
ground," he added.
Eyes on the prize
As Shaheen
Shah Afridi prepares to light up the BBL, cricket fans across the world eagerly
await the high-voltage face-offs he has promised. Whether it’s his rivalry with
Warner, the friendship-turned-battle with Babar Azam, or the challenge of
dismissing Steve Smith, Afridi’s Big Bash journey is shaping up to be a
must-watch storyline this season.
