Surprises Galore: Thunder Boy lone favourite to deliver at Lahore Race Club
Asher Butt
If Sunday’s races at the Lahore Race Club were a test of the punters’ patience, most would have walked away scratching their heads. On a day dominated by surprises and upsets, it was only Thunder Boy — the sole favourite — who lived up to expectations during the 8th Day of the Summer Meeting.
The five-race card saw unexpected winners rise through the field, making it a day for the bold and lucky rather than the form-followers.
Race 1 – Sultan Again Leads the First Surprise
The day kicked off with Sultan Again, largely overlooked, blazing past the favourites to take a convincing win. Raftar, considered a fluke entry, charged into second place, while Good Boy grabbed an unexpected third. The hot favourite, Thunder Prince, was nowhere in sight.
Race 2 – Mr Asia Rewards the Risk-Takers
In a race where the favourite stumbled, Mr Asia brought joy to those backing the underdogs. Bill Gates lived up to his billing as a place finisher, while Thunder Man, who was touted to win, could only manage third. Amigo was unplaced.
Race 3 – Thunder Boy Saves the Favourites’ Pride
Finally, some respite for punters — Thunder Boy stamped his authority with a solid win, living up to every bit of the hype. The drama didn’t end there, though, as Taj Mahal unexpectedly raced into second. Daddy Cool, seen as a wild card, held on for third.
Race 4 – Dubawi’s Angel Flies Under the Radar
Dubawi’s Angel, quietly supported for a place, soared to victory ahead of Sehar, who stunned many with a strong second-place finish. New York City, known more for its surprises than consistency, wrapped up the podium in third.
Race 5 – Rakaposhi Caps the Day with Another Shock
The final race — a test of endurance — ended with another upset as Rakaposhi sprinted to victory. Mera Gondal, expected to show well in the place category, ran a brave second, while Yesteryear, whispered as an outside threat, proved the murmurs right with a third-place finish.
Final Thoughts
From start to finish, the meeting was a punter’s puzzle — full of unexpected results and dramatic finishes. With Thunder Boy being the only favourite to deliver, the day served a reminder: in racing, form is important — but fortune often has the final say.
