PCB denies offering Shaheen vice-captaincy
The Pakistan
Cricket Board (PCB) has moved swiftly to dispel rumors surrounding Shaheen Shah
Afridi and the T20 World Cup vice-captaincy role.
On Saturday, May
26th, reports emerged suggesting Afridi was offered the position after being
removed from the T20 captaincy.
The PCB issued a
statement later, firmly denying any offers of vice-captaincy to Afridi. The
statement clarifies that while the selection committee considered the
vice-captain slot on Friday, "no-one was offered to be vice-captain."
Earlier reports,
reportedly from PCB sources, claimed Afridi was offered the vice-captaincy but
declined. These sources further stated that Afridi expressed his disappointment
regarding the removal of his captaincy. He reportedly affirmed his commitment
to the team as a fast bowler and pledged his full support to the newly
appointed captain.
It's worth noting
that Afridi was given the captaincy for the T20 series against New Zealand
following Babar Azam's removal after the ODI World Cup disappointment in 2023.
However, his captaincy was short-lived, lasting only one series that Pakistan
ultimately lost. This led to his removal from the captaincy role.
With the PCB's
official statement and the earlier reports from unknown sources, the situation
surrounding the T20 World Cup vice-captaincy remains unclear. Cricket fans in
Pakistan will likely have to wait for further official communication from the
PCB to determine who, if anyone, will be appointed as vice-captain.
