LAHORE: Pakistan’s white ball captain Babar Azam emphasized that as they prepare for the upcoming twin tours the main focus is the ICC World Cup trophy.
Speaking to media in a pre-departure press conference, Babar said: “we gear up for the upcoming matches in Ireland and England, but our sights are set on a singular goal and that is bringing home the trophy. While the past is behind us, our unwavering determination to clinch victory remains steadfast. With a cohesive team dynamic and unwavering focus, we believe we have what it takes to seize the trophy and deliver the ultimate triumph.”
He further stated that to him every one of them ate the key players. “Amidst our preparations, I believe all the 15 are the key players. It all depends on a particular day and relevant opposition who is suitable to play to the requirement of team and not as an individual.”
He further stressed that the plan is to play to the best possible way. “We always have hope in each player and as a team we try to fulfil the hope. As a team we try to win and bring smile on the faces of fans. We always try to give hundred percent.
Babar emphasized that there is no time for rotation now. “There is less time left in the World Cup. We have seven matches to play before the World Cup. The players who have been assigned and given responsibilities will be further prepared for the position they have been assigned to.”
On a question on leaving out Amer Jamal and Mohamamd Haris, Babar said that Jamal is a good middle order batter and in his last game he played very well. “For the position he plays, he need to develop his game and become a finisher.
“As of Mohamamd Haris, (it is agreed) he was not given that opportunity but he is a top order batter in the team and in the presence of me (Babar), Mohammad Rizwan, Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman, his place is doubtful. However, he was given that opportunity in PSl but he did not deliver. He was in a bad patch and was dropped after discussion because he cannot be played lower the order,” said Babar.
On Haris Rauf, Babar was full of praise for his dedication and will to bounce back. “Haris, fueled by improved fitness and unwavering determination, is resolute in his quest for a comeback. Despite previous setbacks, his potential remains undeniable.”
“I am hearing for quite some time that why is he [Hassan Ali] back? Selectors have also made it clear that he is there as back up. It is not that he is part of the 15-member squad [for World Cup]. We need to understand that he is a backup because of his experience,” Babar said.
“It is not because of just one person that he [Hasan] is selected. There are seven selectors who selected him,” he added.
Babar said that with the encouragement and support being extended by the chairman, the players feel confident. “Under the guidance of our Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who demands nothing less than our absolute best, all fifteen players are committed to giving their all. Our approach is not one of individual glory but collective success; we play to the needs of the team, meticulously planning every aspect to achieve excellence on the field. Win is losing is part of the game and no one knows the results and all the chairman wants from us to give our hundred percent.”
The Pakistan captain said that although Head Coach Gary Kirsten is busy with his previous assignment in India but he is in constant touch with the other coaching staff and the players and keeping track of all the training and hopefully bring in a positive change in the ranks. “As we navigate the challenges ahead, including crucial decisions on team composition and strategies, communication remains paramount. With Gary Kirsten’s invaluable insights and the collective expertise of our coaches and officials, we're poised to adapt swiftly and effectively to any circumstance.”
Babar said that at international level pressure is always there but while playing as a team and with the support of the nation there will be no pressure. “In he face of mounting pressure, we draw strength from the unwavering support of our nation. Every match is an opportunity to bring joy to our fans and make them proud. While cricket evolves rapidly, we remain steadfast in our commitment to listening to critiques, adapting to conditions, and selecting our team meticulously.”
“As we progress, we'll continue to refine our approach, ensuring that every player, from seasoned veterans to promising newcomers like Mohammad Ali, is given the opportunity to shine. He is a new ball bowler and Is struggling and need time to improve as compared to refined Haris Rauf. With each match, we strive not only for victory but to embody the spirit of teamwork and determination that defines our nation's cricketing beliefs.
“Everyone is in the plan and is discussed properly by all the seven selection committee members and then considered for selection.
“As of run rate in the powerplays, I believe with expectation of a few matches we have played 50 runs in majority of the games. My and Rizwan way of play is different but Siam is a diverse style player. But the things is we all are here to play for a country,” he concluded.
