Royal Salute claims unexpected victory in Islamabad Cup

Royal Salute emerged victorious in the prestigious Islamabad Cup held at the Lahore Race Club on a scorching Sunday afternoon. The day's races were filled with surprises, with both favorites and underdogs showcasing their skills and keeping the crowds on the edge of their seats.

The opening race saw an unexpected win by Ubbi, followed by Salaar in an equally surprising second-place finish. Master Prince completed the podium with a third-place finish, adding to the day's string of upsets.

The second race also defied expectations. While Absolutely Not secured a win, it was Abdullah Champion's third-place finish that surprised the audience, overshadowing the pre-race favorite Luckvir who settled for second place.

The trend continued in the third race, where Elizabeth emerged as the victor, leaving favorite Public Star trailing behind in second. Sehar's third-place finish added to the day's air of surprise.

The main event, the Islamabad Cup, saw Royal Salute living up to its favorite status by clinching the victory. However, Maxi Macs provided a moment of surprise by snatching the second-place position from the predicted frontrunner, Olympus, who had to settle for third.

The day concluded with more upsets. Enchanting One dominated the fifth race, while Wynx secured a surprising second-place finish, leaving favorite Shakira in third.

PCB denies offering Shaheen vice-captaincy

PCB denies offering Shaheen vice-captaincy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has moved swiftly to dispel rumors surrounding Shaheen Shah Afridi and the T20 World Cup vice-captaincy role.

On Saturday, May 26th, reports emerged suggesting Afridi was offered the position after being removed from the T20 captaincy.

The PCB issued a statement later, firmly denying any offers of vice-captaincy to Afridi. The statement clarifies that while the selection committee considered the vice-captain slot on Friday, "no-one was offered to be vice-captain."

Earlier reports, reportedly from PCB sources, claimed Afridi was offered the vice-captaincy but declined. These sources further stated that Afridi expressed his disappointment regarding the removal of his captaincy. He reportedly affirmed his commitment to the team as a fast bowler and pledged his full support to the newly appointed captain.

It's worth noting that Afridi was given the captaincy for the T20 series against New Zealand following Babar Azam's removal after the ODI World Cup disappointment in 2023. However, his captaincy was short-lived, lasting only one series that Pakistan ultimately lost. This led to his removal from the captaincy role.

With the PCB's official statement and the earlier reports from unknown sources, the situation surrounding the T20 World Cup vice-captaincy remains unclear. Cricket fans in Pakistan will likely have to wait for further official communication from the PCB to determine who, if anyone, will be appointed as vice-captain.

Kamran calls for an end to friendships in Pakistan Team

Kamran calls for an end to friendships in Pakistan Team

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal has launched a scathing critique of the national team following their loss to England in the second T20I.

Akmal's criticism centers around the team's selection and a perceived lack of focus on performance.

England secured a 23-run victory over Pakistan in Birmingham, extending Pakistan's losing streak against England to eight out of their last eleven encounters.

Akmal urged the team to move beyond friendship-based selections and prioritize players who are genuinely performing. He believes head coach Gary Kirsten needs to be more assertive in his role and make tough decisions based on merit.

Akmal highlighted the contrasting approaches of England and Pakistan. He commends England's well-defined strategy, particularly their bowling performance in defending a moderate total against a strong Pakistani batting lineup. In contrast, he criticized Pakistan for seemingly prioritizing established players like Shadab Khan despite inconsistent form.

Akmal specifically questioned the continued selection of Saim Ayub, suggesting there are other deserving players on the bench waiting for an opportunity. He emphasized the need to utilize the entire 15-man squad based on current form, not past reputation.

Akmal expressed his disappointment with Kirsten's perceived inaction and urged him to leverage his authority as head coach to make necessary changes. He questioned why talented youngsters like Abrar Ahmed remain sidelined.

Akmal's criticism extends beyond this specific match. He worries about Pakistan's ability to compete against top teams if they continue down this path.  He emphasizes the importance of prioritizing team success over individual glory.

Akmal's outspoken comments are bound to spark discussion within Pakistani cricket circles. His criticism can be seen as a call to action for the team management to prioritize performance and make bold decisions to improve Pakistan's chances in upcoming tournaments.

Pakistani umpires at T20 World Cup - progress or selective metaphor?

Pakistani umpires at T20 World Cup - progress or selective metaphor?

Our correspondent

Three Pakistani umpires officiating in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is undoubtedly a positive development for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and its umpiring fraternity. However, a closer look reveals a story with more nuance than the official press release suggests.

Ahsan Raza, Asif Yaqoob, and Rashid Riaz will represent Pakistan at the T20 World Cup. The PCB credits its recent policy initiatives for their success. The report fails to acknowledge the established reputation of Aleem Dar, who paved the way for these umpires through his own exceptional performance.

While promoting young talent is crucial, the impact of Dar's long career and influence shouldn't be downplayed.

The report focuses solely on the PCB's recent policies, neglecting the foundation laid by previous administrations, like the one under Gen (R) Tauqir Zia, who also identified and promoted talent like Dar.

The report lacks specifics on the "future policy initiatives" mentioned. Did these policies address areas like mentorship, training infrastructure, or technology adoption?

There's no mention of the selection process for the World Cup umpires. Were these appointments based solely on the PCB's domestic program, or did the ICC have a role?

The inclusion of these three umpires is a positive step, but long-term success requires a more comprehensive approach.

The PCB should provide a transparent and detailed account of its umpiring development policies and their impact.

Acknowledging the contributions of past administrators and senior umpires like Aleem Dar fosters a sense of continuity and shared credit.

Continuous improvement through training, mentorship, and technology integration will be vital for Pakistani umpires to maintain their position on the world stage.

Overall, a critical analysis reveals both progress and the need for a more complete picture. The PCB can build on this positive development by fostering a culture of transparency and continuous improvement in its umpiring department.

Naqvi advocates for enhanced domestic cricket structure

PCB Chairman Syed Mohsin Naqvi has, in a decisive move to uplift the standard of cricket in Pakistan, emphasized the need for significant improvements in the domestic cricket structure.
The announcement came following an important meeting of the Domestic Season 2024-25 Cricket Structure and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Governing Council, held in Lahore and chaired by Naqvi himself.
Chairman Naqvi stressed the importance of providing more opportunities for domestic cricketers to play and earn a livelihood. He highlighted the necessity for cricketers to be active throughout the year to enhance their skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for national duty. "A robust and competitive domestic cricket structure will help cricketers polish their talent," Naqvi stated.
The PCB chief expressed his desire for a more comprehensive domestic cricket calendar, proposing additional tournaments in T20, one-day internationals, and four-day formats for the 2024-25 season. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket, offering players continuous engagement and growth opportunities.
During the PSL Governing Council meeting, Naqvi assured franchise owners of his full support. "I want all of you to grow and prosper," he told them, emphasizing the significance of the PSL as a premier event in Pakistan's cricketing landscape. Franchise owners echoed this sentiment, describing the HBL PSL as a "jewel in the crown of cricket in Pakistan" and expressed their commitment to its further development.
A major point of discussion was the proposal to increase the number of teams in the PSL from six to eight by 2026. This expansion is seen as a strategic move to enhance the league's competitiveness and reach. Further discussions on this proposal are scheduled for next month.
The PCB proposed a window from April 7 to May 20 for the 2025 edition of the PSL. This scheduling aims to optimize the league's timing within the international cricket calendar, ensuring maximum participation and viewership.
The 2024-25 domestic cricket season is set to commence in September 2023. Naqvi’s directives include the preparation of a detailed schedule that will fill gaps when international players are on national duty, thus maintaining the continuity and competitiveness of domestic tournaments.
Naqvi concluded the meetings by reiterating the critical role of a strong domestic cricket infrastructure in building a larger pool of skilled players for the national team. His comprehensive plan and unwavering support for both domestic cricket and the PSL reflect his commitment to elevating Pakistan cricket to new heights.

New Coach Kirsten aims to reduce pressure on Babar

By our correspondent

Newly appointed Pakistan white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten has outlined his plans to alleviate the immense pressure on skipper Babar Azam.

Kirsten, along with red-ball coach Jason Gillespie, was appointed by the PCB last month after a comprehensive search for a new coach.

Kirsten will officially assume his role later this month after fulfilling his IPL 2024 commitments. His primary objectives include guiding Pakistan to victory at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and establishing them as a dominant force in short-format cricket.

Both Kirsten and Gillespie have signed three-year contracts, potentially extending their tenure until the 2027 50-over World Cup.

In an interview, Kirsten acknowledged the immense pressure Babar faces to consistently perform and score runs.

He emphasized that a key focus will be to lessen this pressure, allowing Babar to play with greater freedom. Kirsten plans to instill the notion in Babar and the team that he is part of a collective unit, not the sole pillar of success.

By distributing the responsibility and expectations, Babar can be liberated to showcase his natural talent without undue stress.

Babar feels satisfied after Pakistan’s series victory over Ireland

Asher Butt

Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Babar Azam, expressed his delight over his team’s performance after securing a victory in the third T20I against Ireland. The Men in Green clinched the series with a thrilling win in Dublin on Tuesday. Babar attributed the success to the stellar performances of the bowlers, especially during crucial moments in the series decider.

Speaking at the post-match conference, Babar acknowledged the aggressive batting display by Ireland in the initial ten overs. However, he lauded Pakistan’s bowling lineup for their resilience and strategic play. “Credit to the Ireland batsmen for how they batted in the first 10 overs, but (after that) all credit to our bowlers,” Babar said. He specifically praised the efforts of Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Abbas, Imad Wasim, and Hassan Ali. After the first 10 overs, Ireland had reached 110 runs, and Pakistan was looking at a target of 180-190 or even 200. However, the Pakistani bowlers took crucial wickets and applied pressure, especially in the final four overs of the innings.

Babar also highlighted the significance of effective communication and teamwork. He emphasized their pivotal roles in forging a match-winning partnership of 139 runs alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan. “We had good communication in the middle because we have played a lot of cricket together; we were trying to play to our strengths with belief, and the aim was to match the run rate,” Babar explained.

“Our team showed improvement during the Ireland series, especially in the batting department,” said the star batter.

He appreciated contributions by the top-order batters Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, while also showing faith in lower-order batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Azam Khan.

“Rizwan and Fakhar stood out throughout the series, however, the performance by Iftikhar Ahmed and Azam Khan in the lower order has been promising,” he added.

Looking ahead, Babar expressed readiness for the upcoming major tournament and identified positive takeaways from the series against Ireland. “Big tournament coming up, and this is good practice. Now looking forward to the England series. There were lots of positives for us, and we were able to execute our plans. Yes, we made a few mistakes which we will sit and discuss,” he concluded.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan won the three-match T20I series against Ireland 2-1. Their next series before the World Cup 2024 is against England, where they are scheduled to play a four-match T20I series starting from May 221. Here’s the schedule for the England vs. Pakistan T20I series:
