LAHORE:
The announcement of the Pakistan squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series
against New Zealand has been delayed, with selectors set to convene for another
meeting on Sunday.
Originally
scheduled to be unveiled this week, the squad announcement has been postponed.
Selectors,
having discussed potential candidates for the series with captain Babar Azam in
Kakul, where the national squad is engaged in a fitness camp under the
supervision of the Pakistan Army, have returned to Lahore.
Among
the players under consideration for the series are Babar Azam, Saim Ayub,
Muhammad Rizwan, and others listed in the initial probables. Fakhar Zaman's
hand injury is also being evaluated.
However,
fast bowler Haris Rauf, recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during the
recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9, remains unfit and will
continue his rehabilitation.
According
to sources familiar with the matter suggested that there are reports that
premier pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi might be rested for part or the entirety of
the New Zealand series, aligning with the cricket board's policy to manage the
workload of key fast bowlers. Discussions are ongoing regarding this matter to
ensure the protection and fitness testing of newcomers.
On a
positive note, the potential comeback of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir to the
T20I squad is being speculated, as both players recently returned from
retirement.
The
series between Pakistan and New Zealand is set to commence on April 18 at the
Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi, with subsequent matches scheduled in
Lahore.
