Why Pakistan dropped young pacers for West Indies T20Is: Captain Agha Salman explains
Pakistan's three-match T20I series opener against West Indies on Friday

Pakistan is set to begin their three-match T20 International series against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida on Friday, but the spotlight has turned sharply toward some surprising omissions in the squad.
Promising pacers Abbas Afridi, Ahmed Daniyal, and Salman Mirza—all of whom performed impressively in the recent series against Bangladesh—have been left out. This raised eyebrows among cricket fans and experts, especially after their breakthrough displays. However, T20I captain Agha Salman stepped forward during a press talk in Florida to provide clarity and context to the decision.
Not a Snub – A Strategic Shift
According to Agha, the decision to drop the young bowlers is not a reflection of their talent, but a necessary step in Pakistan's shift from experimentation to execution ahead of major tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.
“This is a decisive phase for us,” said Agha. “We’ve seen what the young bowlers can do. But now, we need to move forward with those who have proven themselves consistently on the international stage.”
Focus on Experience
The Pakistan squad sees the return of their senior pace trio:
Shaheen Shah Afridi – rested for the Bangladesh series,
Hasan Ali – back after county cricket commitments,
Haris Rauf – recovered from a recent injury in Major League Cricket.
Agha said the selection committee and coaching staff believe that the experience of these bowlers is crucial for success in upcoming global events, especially when the team needs to perform under pressure.
What About the Dropped Pacers?
The omission feels harsh when viewed through recent stats:
Salman Mirza claimed 7 wickets in 3 T20Is against Bangladesh, looking sharp in his debut series.
Ahmed Daniyal took 3 wickets in 2 games, showing potential.
Abbas Afridi, a familiar name in the T20 setup, had begun to cement his role.
Yet Agha insisted that they are not out of the system and will be closely monitored.
“They are still in our long-term plans,” Agha explained. “But right now, it’s about building chemistry and confidence with the core group we want to take into the big tournaments.”
A Test Against West Indies
The upcoming series is no soft assignment. Despite their recent poor form—including a 5-0 whitewash by Australia—West Indies remain dangerous in T20s. Explosive batting and favorable home conditions in Florida make them tough opponents.
Historically, Pakistan has dominated this matchup, winning 15 out of 21 T20Is against the Caribbean side. However, both teams are coming off recent defeats and will be desperate to bounce back. For Pakistan, it’s also a chance to regain momentum after a 2-1 loss to Bangladesh.
Consistency is the Key
Agha pointed out that consistent selection—especially in the bowling department—can create better rhythm, understanding, and results.
“When bowlers play together repeatedly, they read each other better, support each other, and perform more effectively as a unit,” he added.
This philosophy is guiding Pakistan’s current approach: sticking with a trusted combination, rather than rotating new faces in and out too close to tournament time.
Looking Ahead
While the current focus is on experienced bowlers, Agha hinted that players like Abbas Afridi, Daniyal, and Mirza could return soon, particularly with Pakistan’s busy T20 schedule. Injuries, dips in form, or rotation needs could open the door again.
For now, however, the message is clear: Pakistan is entering tournament mode. The West Indies series is more than just a bilateral contest—it's a preparation ground for the high-stakes competitions ahead.
