Why Pakistan dropped young pacers for West Indies T20Is: Captain Agha Salman explains

Why Pakistan dropped young pacers for West Indies T20Is: Captain Agha Salman explains

Pakistan's three-match T20I series opener against West Indies on Friday

Asher Butt

Pakistan is set to begin their three-match T20 International series against West Indies in Lauderhill, Florida on Friday, but the spotlight has turned sharply toward some surprising omissions in the squad.

Promising pacers Abbas Afridi, Ahmed Daniyal, and Salman Mirza—all of whom performed impressively in the recent series against Bangladesh—have been left out. This raised eyebrows among cricket fans and experts, especially after their breakthrough displays. However, T20I captain Agha Salman stepped forward during a press talk in Florida to provide clarity and context to the decision.

Not a Snub – A Strategic Shift

According to Agha, the decision to drop the young bowlers is not a reflection of their talent, but a necessary step in Pakistan's shift from experimentation to execution ahead of major tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.

“This is a decisive phase for us,” said Agha. “We’ve seen what the young bowlers can do. But now, we need to move forward with those who have proven themselves consistently on the international stage.”

Focus on Experience

The Pakistan squad sees the return of their senior pace trio:

Shaheen Shah Afridi – rested for the Bangladesh series,

Hasan Ali – back after county cricket commitments,

Haris Rauf – recovered from a recent injury in Major League Cricket.

Agha said the selection committee and coaching staff believe that the experience of these bowlers is crucial for success in upcoming global events, especially when the team needs to perform under pressure.

What About the Dropped Pacers?

The omission feels harsh when viewed through recent stats:

Salman Mirza claimed 7 wickets in 3 T20Is against Bangladesh, looking sharp in his debut series.

Ahmed Daniyal took 3 wickets in 2 games, showing potential.

Abbas Afridi, a familiar name in the T20 setup, had begun to cement his role.

Yet Agha insisted that they are not out of the system and will be closely monitored.

“They are still in our long-term plans,” Agha explained. “But right now, it’s about building chemistry and confidence with the core group we want to take into the big tournaments.”

A Test Against West Indies

The upcoming series is no soft assignment. Despite their recent poor form—including a 5-0 whitewash by Australia—West Indies remain dangerous in T20s. Explosive batting and favorable home conditions in Florida make them tough opponents.

Historically, Pakistan has dominated this matchup, winning 15 out of 21 T20Is against the Caribbean side. However, both teams are coming off recent defeats and will be desperate to bounce back. For Pakistan, it’s also a chance to regain momentum after a 2-1 loss to Bangladesh.

Consistency is the Key

Agha pointed out that consistent selection—especially in the bowling department—can create better rhythm, understanding, and results.

“When bowlers play together repeatedly, they read each other better, support each other, and perform more effectively as a unit,” he added.

This philosophy is guiding Pakistan’s current approach: sticking with a trusted combination, rather than rotating new faces in and out too close to tournament time.

Looking Ahead

While the current focus is on experienced bowlers, Agha hinted that players like Abbas Afridi, Daniyal, and Mirza could return soon, particularly with Pakistan’s busy T20 schedule. Injuries, dips in form, or rotation needs could open the door again.

For now, however, the message is clear: Pakistan is entering tournament mode. The West Indies series is more than just a bilateral contest—it's a preparation ground for the high-stakes competitions ahead.

PMYP–Lahore Qalandars talent hunt draws 15,000+ cricketers in South Punjab

Bahawalpur and Multan host four-day trials to nurture future stars

Asher Butt

The cricketing spirit of South Punjab was on full display as the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP), in partnership with Lahore Qalandars, wrapped up its four-day talent hunt in Bahawalpur and Multan. The initiative attracted over 15,000 aspiring cricketers, including both boys and girls, each with the same dream — to make it to the national cricket stage.

The trials, part of the PM Talent Hunt Youth Sports League supported by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), were designed to unearth promising talent from grassroots levels, particularly from regions often overlooked by mainstream scouting. Hosted at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) and a key venue in Multan, the trials dedicated the first day in each city to male participants and the second day to female cricketers.

Following two days of intense sessions in each city, the coaching panel — led by Lahore Qalandars’ professional staff — finalized 64 players (16 boys and 16 girls from each city) for further development.

“The passion and skill we saw in Bahawalpur and Multan was unmatched,” said Atif Rana, CEO of Lahore Qalandars. “If given the right opportunities, these young athletes can shine on any stage. This initiative is just the beginning of what we hope will be a nationwide movement to revive grassroots cricket.”

Atif Rana extended gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, PMYP Chairman Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, and the entire PMYP team for their support, as well as Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran, Vice Chancellor of IUB, for his institution’s top-class facilities and hospitality. He also hinted at a new High Performance Academy branch at IUB, with an MoU likely to be signed soon to expand cricket development initiatives in the region.

For the selected players, the opportunity was life-changing. “I can’t believe I made it,” said one of the selected girls from Multan. “We are so grateful to PM Shehbaz Sharif and Lahore Qalandars for coming to our city. We’ll train hard and make Pakistan proud.”

This grassroots initiative aims to provide opportunities beyond the big cities and set up a clear pathway for talented players to reach the professional level. With such an overwhelming response in South Punjab, the PMYP–Lahore Qalandars talent hunt is expected to roll out in other regions soon, creating more chances for young cricketers across Pakistan.

Underdogs dominate as surprises rock 8th summer meet at LRC

Underdogs dominate as surprises rock 8th summer meeting

Only two favourites claim victories; Smart Fighter, Luckvir, and Son Of Sultan upset the odds

Asher Butt

In a thrilling turn of events, three out of five races were claimed by underdogs during the 8th Day Summer Meeting 2025 at the Lahore Race Club, held on a warm Sunday evening. While two pre-race favourites managed to live up to expectations, the rest of the card was defined by unexpected performances that shook punters and delighted casual racegoers.

Smart Fighter stuns field

The opening Quetta Plate turned heads right from the start. Smart Fighter, a relatively unknown name, powered through to clinch a surprising victory. Thunder Prince, also not heavily backed, came in second. Meanwhile, Thunder Cloud, the pre-race favourite, settled for a modest third place in a disappointing outing.

Daddy Cool holds his nerve

In a more predictable result, the crowd-favourite Daddy Cool ran a composed race to claim first place. Backed only as a fluke, Zaman Sahib impressed many by grabbing second. The expected place-finisher, Thunder Man, lived up to that prediction by crossing the line in third.

Absolutely Not dominates, Macs surprises

The third event went according to form at the top, with Absolutely Not — the standout favourite — storming to a convincing win. Generosity took second as anticipated in the place category, but the real surprise came in the form of Macs, who edged his way into third against the odds.

Luckvir upsets expectations

Though backed only for a place finish, Luckvir defied predictions and galloped to victory. New York City, an outsider by most accounts, snatched second, while Dubawi’s Angel, considered a fluke chance, managed a respectable third. The favourites were nowhere to be seen in this unexpected result.

Son Of Sultan shocks field

The closing race saw Son Of Sultan emerge as the upset winner, stealing the spotlight from the well-favoured Brigadier, who had to settle for second. Elizabeth, seen only as a fluke possibility, stunned the field to secure third.

Sunday’s races were a rollercoaster of form-breaking performances and surprising podium finishes. The dominance of underdogs in three out of five events has added a new level of excitement to the ongoing Summer Meeting 2025. Punters are now likely to approach future race cards with extra caution, knowing that surprises may be just around the corner.

With the season heating up — both literally and figuratively — fans can look forward to more action, drama, and unexpected victories in the coming weeks.

Five Quetta Plates set to entertain on Sunday evening

Asher Butt

The Lahore Race Club is all set for an action-packed Sunday as the 8th Day of the Summer Meeting 2025 gallops into the spotlight. This weekend’s card features five thrilling Quetta Plate races, promising speed, stamina, and surprises.

All five races fall under Class VII, but are split into different divisions. The first four are quickfire 1000-metre sprints, while the final race stretches out to a slightly longer 1100 metres, testing the endurance of both horse and jockey.

Race 1: Quetta Plate (Class VII – Div VI & VII)

The opener has a solid line-up of 11 runners. All eyes will be on Thunder Cloud (KRC), the hot favourite. I Shall Lead could sneak into the places, while Shahan Shah may just surprise us as a fluke. Also in the mix are Drago, Smart Fighter, Raftar, Good Boy, Thunder Prince, Thunder Lady, Dubai Love, and Gifts of Gold.

Race 2: Quetta Plate (Class VII – Div V & VI)

This seven-horse field sees Daddy Cool leading the betting charts as the favourite. Thunder Man (KRC) looks like a strong place bet, while Zaman Sahib could be the wildcard. Others to watch include Latin Storm, Rashid Prince, Malik Choice, and Leo Star.

Race 3: Quetta Plate (Class VII – Div IV)

The third race might belong to Absolutely Not, the standout favourite in this seven-horse showdown. Generosity seems well-placed to challenge, and Gabriela could deliver an upset. Rounding out the field are Taj Mahal, Yes Commander, Gondal One, and Macs.

Race 4: Quetta Plate (Class VII – Div III)

A compact but competitive bunch of six will line up here. Little Master is the one to beat, but keep an eye on Luckvir for a strong place finish. Dubawi’s Angel might turn some heads too. Also running: New York City, Haseeb Thunder, and Black Fire.

Race 5: Quetta Plate (Class VII – Div I & II)

The final race of the day will be the longest and possibly the most unpredictable. Brigadier looks solid as the favourite, with Samore City fancied for the place. Elizabeth, meanwhile, could spring a fluke win. Other runners include Son of Sultan, Mera Gondal, and Desert Parri.

With a mix of favourites, place hopefuls, and dark horses across all five races, the 8th Day Summer Meeting has all the makings of a fantastic race evening. Whether you're at the track or following from afar, Sunday promises pace, power, and plenty of thrilling finishes.

Over 15,000 youths attend Qalandars trials in Larkana and Sukkur

Cricket revolution in Sindh:

Over 15,000 youths attend Qalandars trials in Larkana and Sukkur

Asher Butt

A wave of cricketing ambition swept through Sindh as more than 15,000 young athletes participated in the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) – Lahore Qalandars Talent Hunt trials, held over two days each in Larkana and Sukkur. The initiative, hailed as a game-changer for youth development, is redefining access to cricket in Pakistan’s underserved regions.

In Larkana, over 7,000 boys and girls braved the heat to showcase their skills, while Sukkur saw an even larger turnout of 8,000+ participants, making it one of the most successful legs of the nationwide campaign.

The trials are part of a broader effort to unearth raw talent from remote areas, with Lahore Qalandars providing technical expertise and PMYP offering institutional support. Speaking at the conclusion of the trials, Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana described the experience as “nothing short of extraordinary,” praising the discipline, hunger, and skill of the participants.

“This is a cricket revolution. These young boys and girls came not just with passion, but with the hunger to grow. The next superstars are waiting in the heartlands of Pakistan,” Rana said.

He announced plans to form five regional teams from Sindh, ensuring sustained development and exposure for selected players. The trials also marked a first-time opportunity for many participants to perform in front of professional selectors. A young girl from Larkana shared, “No one ever came to ask about our talent before. Now I believe I can make it to the national team one day.”

Participants expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the PMYP team, and Lahore Qalandars, recognizing the initiative as a gateway to dreams once thought unreachable.

The PMYP–Lahore Qalandars Talent Hunt will continue across other cities in Sindh, with trials already held in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad. Over 20,000 players have enrolled so far, with selected athletes to receive professional training, stipends, and national exposure through Lahore Qalandars’ Player Development Program.

Anum, Uzair elevate Pakistan in the world of ultra endurance

From Summits to Start Lines

Anum, Uzair elevate Pakistan in the world of ultra endurance

Asher Butt

Pakistan isn’t just home to towering mountains and breathtaking landscapes — it's also home to some truly inspiring athletes who are breaking barriers, one summit and one stride at a time. Among them, the husband-wife duo Anum Uzair and Uzair Ahmed are quickly becoming icons of strength, resilience, and high-altitude endurance.

While most couples bond over movie nights or vacations, Anum and Uzair are writing their story across some of the toughest terrains on earth. From summiting Manaslu (8,163 meters) — the eighth-highest mountain in the world — to conquering Broad Peak, Minglik Sar, and the notorious Hispar Pass, their mountaineering record speaks volumes. But the adventure doesn’t stop at peaks.

Their latest achievement? Finishing the Galiyat Mountain Trail 60K — an internationally certified ultramarathon held in the mesmerizing Galiyat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan — on July 20, 2025.

What is the Galiyat Mountain Trail 60K?

This isn’t your average marathon. It's a UTMB World Series and ITRA-certified trail race — meaning it meets international standards in terms of course difficulty, safety, and athletic prestige. The 60-kilometer ultramarathon winds through the thick pine forests and majestic slopes of the Himalayan foothills, starting from Thandiyani and finishing at Khaira Gali. The course demands over 3,000 meters of elevation gain, with steep climbs up Miranjani and Mushkpuri Tops, the scenic Pipe Trail, and a historic tunnel that takes runners back in time — literally and figuratively.

A Pakistani woman on top of the trail

While many runners struggled to even reach the finish line, Anum Uzair blazed her way through the unforgiving course in 12 hours and 57 minutes — securing first place in the women's category and making a powerful statement for Pakistani women in endurance sports.

Her performance wasn’t just about speed — it was about consistency, control, and conquering the mental battles that define every kilometer of an ultra. She wasn’t just running for a medal; she was running for representation, resilience, and pride.

Uzair Ahmed: The barrister who runs mountains

Running beside her, quite literally, was Uzair Ahmed — a full-time barrister and full-time mountain soul. Completing this ultramarathon wasn’t just a physical challenge for him, but also a personal affirmation of the couple’s shared lifestyle of pushing limits, defying odds, and redefining strength.

Their presence on the course brought more than athletic skill — it brought meaning, emotion, and purpose to every mile covered.

Why it matters

What makes this story truly remarkable is that Pakistan is still a developing nation in terms of outdoor sports infrastructure. Events like the Galiyat Mountain Trail are helping change that — not only by attracting international runners but also by spotlighting our local talent.

Anum and Uzair’s journey proves that you don’t need to be born in the Alps or train in elite European camps to become a world-class ultra-endurance athlete. What you need is grit, belief, training, and the will to climb — both physically and metaphorically.

And yes, the UTMB points they’ve now earned open doors to global races like UTMB Mont-Blanc in France — considered the Olympics of trail running.

What we can learn

Passion isn’t limited by profession — Uzair balances legal practice with world-class adventure.

Power couples build together — they’re not just partners in life, but partners in pursuit.

Women are leading from the front — Anum’s win is a message to every young girl watching: you belong on the trail too.

Pakistan’s mountains are for more than photos — they are training grounds for the world stage.

Final thoughts

The journey of Anum Uzair and Uzair Ahmed is not just about medals or finish lines. It’s about carving space for Pakistani athletes in spaces where they’ve been long underrepresented. It's about showing that from courtrooms to cliff edges, from gym floors to mountain trails, excellence has no boundaries.

As they continue to scale new heights and race across new trails, their story invites all of us to lace up — whether for a run, a climb, or simply the next big challenge in our lives.

Have you ever tried trail running or hiking in Pakistan? Share your thoughts or trail dreams in the comments below. And if Anum and Uzair’s story inspired you, hit the share button — because someone else out there might need this push too.

Olympian Zahid Sharif to receive benefit hockey match on September 6

Zahid Sharif to receive benefit hockey match on September 6

Asher Butt

In a gesture long overdue, Pakistan's former Olympian Zahid Sharif will be celebrated with a special benefit hockey match on September 6, offering not only recognition for his contributions but also a lifeline during a time of personal hardship.

The announcement was made by veteran organizer Muhammad Yaqoob during a press conference held at the SJAL Office in Lahore, where he outlined plans for an international fixture supported by Pak Hero Hockey Club. “Foreign players will be invited, and letters have been sent to both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Punjab seeking their presence and backing,” Yaqoob stated.

Sharif, once a dominant force in Pakistan’s Olympic hockey squad, shared a sobering account of his struggles: “Paying even basic utility bills has become a major challenge for me,” he said, his words punctuating a quiet crisis faced by many retired athletes. His plea for help was matched by a broader call for reform.

Urging authorities to restore job placements for hockey players — a policy that once ensured stability for national athletes — Zahid Sharif emphasized the urgent need to revive the sport from both grassroots and governance levels.

His appeal to the Chief Minister of Punjab to attend the match is more than ceremonial; it’s a push for visibility and commitment from leadership toward hockey’s revival.

He further stated that September’s match will be more than a tribute — it’s a reflection of Pakistan’s complex sports history, where glory often fades into obscurity unless institutions step forward. Zahid Sharif’s story shines a light on the gap between sporting excellence and systemic neglect.

Unpredictability reigns at Lahore Race Club’s 7th day meet

Unpredictability reigns at Lahore Race Club’s 7th day meet

Asher Butt

If there’s one word to describe the 7th Day Summer Meeting at Lahore Race Club — it’s unpredictable. From fluke winners to favourites falling short, Sunday evening’s races were a rollercoaster of surprises that kept punters and spectators on their toes.

The day kicked off on a high as Zindagi, the favourite, lived up to the hype by winning the opener in style. But right behind was Sargana Choice, seen by many as a long shot, storming into second place. Thunder Cloud, backed for a place finish, secured third.

The second race added to the drama as Noon Princess dominated from start to finish. But the real twist came when Thunder Man surprised everyone with a second-place finish, while Mr Asia landed third — shocking many who hadn’t even listed him as a contender.

In the third race, Monsoon Mischief made the most of its place contender status by going all the way and claiming the win. Sky Warrior, dismissed as a fluke before the race, ran a solid second. Favourite Zaman Sahib had to settle for a disappointing third.

Then came one of the biggest upsets of the day: Yesteryear, a barely noticed entry, exploded into form with a furious run to win the fourth race. Great One placed second as expected, while Luckvir finished third — another unexpected but welcome surprise.

The curtain came down with the fifth and final race, where Brigadier, written off by many, silenced critics with a bold victory. Samore City and Desert Parri, neither of whom were favourites, wrapped up the places.

It was a day that reminded everyone why horse racing is such a thrilling sport — anything can happen, and it usually does.

Qalandar trials unearth talented gems

Qalandar trials unearth talented gems

From unpolished gems to national glory: Pakistan's youth deliver big in talent hunts and global arenas

Asher Butt

Pakistan’s sporting pulse is beating louder this July, not through megastar headlines, but through the determined rise of its youth — in volleyball courts, cricket grounds, and even weightlifting platforms abroad and so on snooker table. What began as trials in dusty fields and rigorous training camps is now translating into podium finishes and historic breakthroughs.

Volleyball’s young titans crush india, eye asian crown

In Thailand, the U16 boys’ volleyball squad scripted a compelling narrative. Their straight-sets demolition of India wasn’t just a semifinal win — it was a symbolic shift in youth dominance in Asian volleyball. With Junaid’s thundering spikes and Faizan’s lethal blocks, Pakistan not only entered the final against Iran, but also punched a ticket to the FIVB U17 World Championship 2026. The team, unbeaten across six matches, embodies the grit and strategy that Pakistan has long yearned for in youth development.

Strength lifting medals in Thailand: Breaking new ground

Another understated but powerful moment came from Pattaya, where Pakistani strength lifters bagged medals in the World Championship. Rao Zafar Iqbal Advocate and Chaudhry Ashraf’s silver finishes, along with Urooj Kiran’s double bronze, showed how strength sports — often on the margins — are finally finding visibility. The announcement of strength lifting’s inclusion in the 2026 World Nomad Games adds further weight to Pakistan’s global sporting presence.

Sindh’s cricket trials: Dreams uncorked in Hyderabad and Benazirabad

Back home, Lahore Qalandars and the Prime Minister’s Youth Program are quietly revolutionizing access to cricket. In just four days across Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad, more than 14,000 boys and girls turned up — not for photo ops, but for genuine chances to be seen. With over 60 players selected for next-stage grooming, the initiative is changing the narrative: from talent lost in rural pockets to talent propelled into the national pipeline.

What these wins mean

These aren’t isolated victories. They reflect:

An evolving, inclusive sporting landscape

Institutional collaboration (PMYP, PVF, Qalandars, international federations)

Talent recognition across gender, geography, and disciplines

The task ahead? Sustain the momentum. Build on infrastructure, coaching, and athlete welfare to ensure these young achievers aren’t just flashes of brilliance — but the foundation of Pakistan’s sporting future.

Race 4: Murree Plate – Class VII (Division III & IV)

This one sees Black Fire as the standout favourite. Great One is expected to hold strong for place, and Thunder Boy (Krc) could surprise punters. Also running are Yesteryear, Luckvir, National Colour, Generosity, and Absolutely Not.

Race 5: Murree Plate – Class VII (Division I & II)

To wrap up the evening, the final race stretches to 1,000 metres, offering a challenge of endurance. Elizabeth is the clear favourite, with Black Master chasing a place finish and Brigadier seen as the dark horse. The field also features Samore City, Desert Parri, and Falco.

With a mix of sure shots, place contenders, and unpredictable flukes, the evening promises plenty of drama on the turf. Whether you’re following favourites or hoping for an upset, there’s something for every race fan at the Lahore Race Club this Sunday.

PCB media ethics under scrutiny after senior journalist's removal

PCB media ethics under scrutiny after senior journalist's removal

Our Correspondent

LAHORE: In a move raising serious questions about journalistic access and the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) transparency, Asher Butt, a senior sports correspondent for The News Lahore, was abruptly removed from the official PCB Lahore Media WhatsApp group. The action, taken without explanation, occurred shortly after Butt sought the PCB's official stance on a critical Auditor General's report detailing alleged financial misappropriations within the board.

The Auditor General's report, highlighted by renowned investigative journalist Ansar Abbasi, reportedly exposed millions in unapproved perks, billions in unrecovered funds, and questionable appointments within the PCB.

When The News correspondent, Asher Butt, on the directions of his Editor, approached Amir Mir, the newly appointed PCB Director Media, for the board's version on these serious allegations, the response was evasive. In a series of WhatsApp messages (later deleted by Mir from the conversation), Mir stated: "This is my reply; (Common sense says only the finance department can prepare a reply on the first working day on Monday to this so I woll [will] have ti [it] share this if you want a response.)"

Asher Butt then informed Mir that The News would proceed with publishing the news based on the Auditor General's report, while advising the PCB to issue its official version after consulting its finance department. The conversation concluded, with his words whatever suits you but shortly after, Mir again sent another message: "You may have to approach the previous chairmen for their version because none of this happened during Mohsin Naqvi's tenure."

The very next day, on Sunday, Asher Butt, who was performing his professional duty in line with the norms set by the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP), found himself removed from the PCB media WhatsApp group.

Attempts to obtain a response from Amir Mir or other PCB officials regarding this removal and the allegations in the audit report proved futile, with no spokesperson from the PCB offering a comment. Even Mohammad Rafi Ullah, PCB chairman spokesperson did not respond.

Journalistic principles and the code of conduct mandated by the Press Council of Pakistan require media outlets to seek official versions from relevant offices. It is equally the duty of an organization's media department or spokesperson to provide their views or issue denials. Similar practice was evident in the PCB before Mir took charge after the resignation of Sami Ul Hasan. The PCB's apparent refusal to offer a proper response, opting instead for what appears to be a retaliatory action against a journalist doing his job, is deemed to be against the integrity expected of an institution as prestigious as the PCB. The News sought a version solely on the Auditor General’s report, not based on its own framing, yet the PCB's response was notably ambiguous and uncooperative.

Another electrifying day of racing unfolded at the Lahore Racing Club (LRC) track on Sunday evening, delivering a captivating blend of predictable triumphs and exhilarating upsets. From dominant favorites to surprising dark horses, the competition kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

Thunder Man kicks off day with expected victory

The opening race saw the highly-touted Thunder Man (KRC) live up to every expectation, cruising to a comfortable victory. While the favorite took the top spot, Sargana Choice, a horse whispered to be a potential spoiler, secured a commendable second place. The true shocker of the race came from Thunder Prince (KRC), an absolute outsider that defied all odds to snatch a surprising third, setting an unpredictable tone for the day.

Monsoon Mischief stuns with unforeseen win

The second race delivered the day's most dramatic moment. An entirely unknown contender, Monsoon Mischief, burst onto the scene with an astonishing win, leaving seasoned punters bewildered. Leo Star, a name that had been quietly circulating as a dark horse, managed to secure second place. Rounding out the top three was Thunder Cloud (KRC), a competitor not considered among the frontrunners, further cementing the race's unpredictable nature.

Favorites reassert dominance

Order was largely restored in the mid-card races. In the third, Black Fire, a top choice, showcased its class by clinching the victory. As anticipated, Zaman Sahib followed closely in second, while Sky Warrior, a horse many hoped would deliver a surprise, settled for third.

Similarly, the fourth race continued this trend of strong performances from the front of the pack. The declared leader, Mera Gondal, powered its way to a decisive win. Thunder Boy (KRC) mirrored its strong form, securing a solid second place, with the previously unknown Great One making a noteworthy appearance in third.

Son of Sultan delivers, Sehar surprises

The penultimate race saw Son of Sultan, a horse widely tipped for a place finish, exceed expectations by claiming the victory. The favorite, Brigadier, finished a strong second. However, the day's final surprise came from Sehar, who galloped into third place, adding one last unexpected twist to a memorable day of racing at KRC.

From favorites crossing the finish line to underdogs stealing the show, LRC once again proved why the track is where legends are made and surprises are always just a hoofbeat away!

Over two action-packed days, thousands of passionate young cricketers from across the city showcased their skills in hopes of earning a place in the Qalandars’ development setup.

Following the trials, a 15-member boys and girls team was officially announced by Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana, and head coaches Marina Iqbal and Riaz Afridi.

“The massive turnout in Karachi is a testament to the youth’s trust in the Lahore Qalandars system,” said Atif Rana. “Our journey began a decade ago, and we’re proud to have produced top-tier national players through this very initiative. The Prime Minister’s backing has given us the strength to take this movement nationwide.”

Rana shared that nearly 15,000 male and female cricketers participated in Karachi alone—making it one of the most vibrant and talent-rich trials to date. From Karachi, the talent hunt will now move to Hyderabad, with plans to form five teams from various regions of Sindh.

Under this national initiative, five regional teams will be selected from each province, as well as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. These teams will compete in regional tournaments, with top performers progressing to the national level. The best of the best will then be trained at the Lahore Qalandars High-Performance Center—a breeding ground for future stars.

Coaches Marina Iqbal and Riaz Afridi lauded the energy and talent on display in Karachi. “We witnessed some incredibly gifted players. This initiative by PMYP and Lahore Qalandars is not just timely but crucial for Pakistan’s cricketing future,” said Marina.

The newly selected players expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chairman PMYP Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, and the entire Lahore Qalandars leadership, including CEO Atif Rana and COO Sameen Rana, for giving them this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Many of them called this moment a “dream come true,” and pledged to give their best to rise through the ranks and represent Pakistan at the highest level.

With the Karachi trials now complete, the talent hunt moves forward—bringing hope, opportunity, and the promise of a brighter cricketing future for youth across the nation.

All eyes on Lahore Race Club with fast-paced action set for Sunday

All eyes on Lahore Race Club with fast-paced action set for Sunday

The thrill of horse racing returns this Sunday evening as the 6th Day of the Lahore Summer Meeting 2025 promises a packed schedule at the Lahore Race Club. With five sprint races, all titled Jehlum Plate and each spanning 900 meters, fans of equine sports are in for an adrenaline-fueled evening.

What makes this race day particularly exciting is the even spread of favourites, dark horses, and surprise packages across the card. Each race features Class VII thoroughbreds split into their respective divisions, ensuring a level playing field—but also making the outcome all the more unpredictable.

Race 1 – The Opener

The day kicks off with a lively contest where Thunder Man (KRC) enters as the favourite, having shown impressive recent form. King Asia is expected to push hard, while Sargana Choice could throw in a surprise. Keep an eye on Shahan Shah, Star Crown, My Luck, Abdullah Love, Thunder Prince (KRC), and American Star—each of whom is capable of grabbing the spotlight on the right day.

Race 2 – Battle of speedsters

Noon Princess has been generating buzz as the one to beat. Bill Gates should be good for a place finish, while Leo Star is being whispered about as a potential game-changer. Other runners include Mr. Asia, Monsoon Mischief, Smart Fighter, Thunder Cloud (KRC), and I Shall Lead, all bringing different strengths to the field.

Race 3 – Mid-card drama

This is one to watch! Black Fire appears to be the top choice here, but Zaman Sahib is not far behind in form and spirit. Sky Warrior could break the mold with an unexpected dash, and there’s still room for upsets from Macs, Azaad, Latin Storm, and Rashid Prince.

Race 4 – Late evening clash

Mera Gondal leads this Class VII Division III & IV field, but Thunder Boy (KRC) is getting plenty of nods as a solid runner-up option. Don’t count out Absolutely Not, who, despite inconsistency, has pulled off surprises before. National Colour, Taj Mahal, Debate Princess, and Great One round out this strong and open race.

Race 5 – Closing sprint

The evening wraps up with a tight contest where Brigadier seems to have the edge. Son of Sultan should finish strong, while Dubawi’s Angel could steal the show if it finds rhythm early. Other contenders include Black Master and Sehar, ready to pounce if others falter.

All five races are short sprints, meaning the start and early acceleration will be everything. With a healthy mix of favourites and potential spoilers, Sunday’s racing is poised to offer drama, speed, and plenty of surprises. As per Lahore Race Club regulations, all events will be held strictly without betting or wagering, and final declarations are due by 4:30 PM on race day.

So, whether you’re a racing enthusiast or just love the thrill of the track, the 6th Day Summer Meeting is a must-watch. Don’t miss out on this action-packed evening at Lahore Race Club!
