پاکستان میں رہتے ہوئے، میں یہ فیصلہ نہیں کر پاتی کہ اس ملک کے لوگ واقعی ایمانداری اور شفافیت چاہتے ہیں، یا جھوٹ اور بدعنوانی۔  

میرا خیال ہے کہ ہماری اکثریت نے بددیانتی کو طرزِ زندگی کے طور پر چن لیا ہے۔  

امیر سے لے کر متوسط طبقے تک اور غریب تک، ہم منافقت، جھوٹ اور پستی میں جی رہے ہیں۔ میرا خیال ہے کہ ہم اسی کو ترجیح دیتے ہیں۔  

پاکستانی واقعی جھوٹ بولنے کے عادی ہو چکے ہیں۔ یہ تقریباً ایک خودکار ردِ عمل ہے۔ ہم سچ سے محبت نہیں کرتے۔  

ان لوگوں کے لیے جو مجھے بتاتے ہیں کہ یہ پوری دنیا میں سچ ہے، میں صرف اس ماحول کو جانتی ہوں جس میں میں رہتی ہوں، جو پاکستان ہے۔ اور میں نے ایسے لوگ کہیں اور نہیں دیکھے۔  

شاید اس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ سچ بولنا، اخلاقی ہونا، اچھا ہونا، محنت طلب کام ہے۔ اور ہم اس کے لیے بہادر نہیں ہیں۔  

یہ ہمارا قومی کردار ہے، دنیا ہمیں اسی طرح دیکھتی ہے۔ ہمیں انکار میں چھپنے کے بجائے اس کا سامنا کرنا چاہیے۔  

سچ تو یہ ہے کہ ہم ایک بزدل قوم ہیں۔ سچ سے ڈرنے والے، محنت سے ڈرنے والے، نتائج سے ڈرنے والے۔  

ہر انسان میں یہ رجحانات ہوتے ہیں۔ لیکن پاکستان میں ہم ان پر قابو پانے کی کوشش کرنے کے بجائے ان میں مبتلا ہو جاتے ہیں۔  

سیاسی جماعتوں، ملاؤں، انٹیلی جنس ایجنسیوں، بیوروکریٹس نے بددیانتی کی یہ ثقافت پیدا نہیں کی۔ انہوں نے اس سے فائدہ اٹھایا۔  

اور ایٹمی طاقت، اور مضبوط فوجیں، اور بھرے ہوئے خزانے ہمیں ایک مضبوط قوم نہیں بنائیں گے، ہمیں مضبوط یا اچھے لوگ نہیں بنائیں گے۔  

اپنی مشکلات پر قابو پانے کے لیے محنت کرنے کے بجائے ہم روتے ہیں اور الزام دوسروں پر ڈالتے ہیں۔ ہم نے ابھی تک اپنا سامنا نہیں کیا۔  

تو جب آپ پوچھتے ہیں کہ پاکستان کے ساتھ کیا مسئلہ ہے، تو یہ سمجھ لیں کہ بیماری ہمارے اپنے اندر ہے۔ ہم میں سے ہر ایک کے اندر۔  

ہم ہی مسئلہ ہیں۔  

اور ہر وہ شخص جو کہتا ہے، "میں نہیں، میں ایماندار ہوں" سب سے بڑا جھوٹا ہے۔

Living in Pakistan, I cannot decide whether the people of this country truly want honesty and transparency, or lies and corruption.

I believe the majority of us have chosen dishonesty as a way of life. From the rich to the middle class to the poor, we are living in hypocrisy, lies, and degradation. I believe we actually prefer it this way.

Pakistanis have truly become addicted to lying. It is almost an automatic reflex. We do not love the truth.

To those who tell me that this is true all over the world—I only know the environment I live in, which is Pakistan. And I have not seen people like this anywhere else.

Perhaps it is because speaking the truth, being moral, and being good requires hard work. And we are not brave enough for that.

This is our national character; this is how the world sees us. We must face it instead of hiding in denial.

The truth is, we are a cowardly nation. Afraid of the truth, afraid of hard work, afraid of the consequences.

Every human being has these tendencies. But in Pakistan, instead of trying to control them, we indulge in them.

Political parties, mullahs, intelligence agencies, and bureaucrats did not create this culture of dishonesty. They merely exploited it.

And nuclear power, strong militaries, and full treasuries will not make us a strong nation; they will not make us strong or good people.

Instead of working hard to overcome our difficulties, we cry and shift the blame onto others. We have not faced ourselves yet.

So when you ask what is wrong with Pakistan, understand that the disease is within ourselves. Within every single one of us.

*We are the problem.*

And every person who says, "Not me, I am honest," is the biggest liar of all.

Including myself.
