Producing educated clerks not geniuses

When a new boy comes to a master denter (car body repairer), he is initially tasked with washing cars and fetching tools. In the second stage, he learns body scraping using sandpaper. Gradually, spending weeks and months, he goes from applying putty to handling the hammer, and then from welding new parts to finally mastering color matching and painting. After years of dedication, when he becomes the master’s senior apprentice, a brand-new master enters the world of auto body fabrication with absolute confidence.

Whether it is a mechanic’s apprentice or a brickmason's, a student of a senior chef in a hotel or that of a master carpenter, this is how they learn the trade. They build their reputation in the market. They understand the supply chain and its transactions. From accounting for the work to choosing a new location and gaining the confidence to set up shop—they start their journey having acquired all of this from their master.

On the other hand, when a student graduates from our schools and colleges after dedicating 14 to 16 years of their life, what do they possess besides a paper certificate? Do they understand their field of study with that level of intricacy? The mechanic's apprentice spends months scrubbing and cleaning car parts in kerosene; that machinery becomes hardwired into his mind. Does a school or college student graduate with that same level of attachment to their field?

No matter the field, when our student graduates, they only know how to read and write. After finishing their education, they still have to learn their actual work out on the field. It is only after their studies that they begin to gain confidence in their profession. And if, God forbid, they do not secure a job in time, they are left utterly clueless about what to do next. Losing whatever little confidence they had left, they look for any chance to become a cog in a running machine and fit themselves in somewhere—often in a field they never even studied.

This is why we say our current education system is merely producing educated clerks. Those with better educational models are turning us into a consumer market. Our skilled laborers (the mistris) are running this market, while the degree holders stand by, confused, looking on and wondering, "Where is our opportunity in all of this?"

ایک ڈینٹر استاد کے پاس جب نیا لڑکا آتا ہے تو اس سے پہلے گاڑیوں کی دھلائی اور اوزار لانے کا کام لیا جاتا ہے. دوسرے مرحلے میں ریگمال سے باڈی سکریپنگ سیکھتا ہے. مرحلہ وار ہفتے مہینے لگا کر وہ پوٹین سے ہتھوڑی اور پھر ویلڈنگ سے نیا حصہ لگانا سیکھ کر کلر میچنگ اور پینٹنگ تک پہنچتا ہے. ماہ و سال کے بعد جب یہ اپنے استاد کا سینیر شاگرد بن جاتا ہے تب باڈی میکنگ کی دنیا میں مکمل اعتماد کے ساتھ ایک نئے استاد کی انٹری ہوتی ہے. 

مکینک کا شاگرد ہو یا راج مستری کا، کسی ہوٹل میں سینیر باورچی کا شاگرد ہو یا کسی فرنیچر بنانے والے ترکھان استاد کا شاگرد یہ کام سیکھتے ہیں. اپنی مارکیٹ میں پہچان بناتے ہیں. اسکا لین دین یعنی سپلائی لائن سمجھتے ہیں.  کام کی اکاونٹنگ سے لے کر نئی جگہ کا انتخاب اور بیٹھنے کا اعتماد سب اپنے استاد سے حاصل کر کے شروعات کرتے ہیں. 

ہمارے سکول اور کالجوں میں زندگی کے چودہ سولہ سال ایک طالب علم جب دے کر نکلتا ہے تو ایک کاغذ کے سرٹیفکیٹ کے علاوہ اس کے پاس کیا ہوتا ہے.؟ کیا اسے اپنی پڑھی ہوئی فیلڈ اس باریکی سے معلوم ہوتی ہے.؟  مکینیک شاگرد مہینوں مٹی کے تیل میں جس گاڑی کے پرزے رگڑ رگڑ کا صاف کر رہا ہوتا ہے. وہ مشین اس کے ذہن سے چپک جاتی ہے. کیا سکول کالج کا طالب علم اپنی فیلڈ کے ساتھ یہ اٹیچمنٹ لے کر نکلتا ہے.؟ 

ہمارا جس شعبے کا بھی طالب علم جب پڑھ کر نکلتا ہے تو اسے بس لکھنا اور پڑھنا آتا ہے. پڑھائی کے بعد اسے اپنا کام فیلڈ پر سیکھنا پڑ جاتا ہے. پڑھائی کے بعد یہ اپنی فیلڈ کا اعتماد حاصل کرتا ہے. اور اگر خدانخواستہ بروقت نوکری نہ ملے تب اسے بلکل سمجھ نہیں آتی اب یہ کرے تو کیا کرے.؟ یہ اپنا تھوڑا بہت اعتماد بھی ہار کر پھر کسی بھی جگہ کسی بھی چلتی مشین کا پرزہ بننے کا چانس دیکھ کر وہاں فٹ ہو جاتا ہے. وہ جسے اس نے پڑھا ہی نہیں ہوتا. 

اس لئے ہم کہتے ہیں ہمارا موجودہ تعلیمی نظام بس پڑھے لکھے کلرک بنا رہا ہے. بہتر تعلیمی نظام والے ہمیں مارکیٹ بنا رہے ہیں. ہمارے مستری اس مارکیٹ کو چلا رہے ہیں. اور ڈگری یافتہ کنفیوز کھڑے دیکھ رہے ہوتے ہیں اس میں ہمارا چانس کہاں ہے؟
