By our correspondent

Qasim Ali Khan delivered a masterclass performance to take the first-round lead in the Punjab Amateur Golf Championship 2025 at the Lahore Garrison Greens Golf Course, shooting an impressive four-under-par 68 on Thursday.

The Gymkhana golfer showcased exceptional skill throughout the round, combining powerful tee shots with precise approach play to establish himself as the frontrunner. However, the leaderboard remains tightly packed with Pakistan's top-ranked amateur Nouman Ilyas close behind, carding a three-under-par 69, while Defence Raya's promising talent Mohammed Abdullah Khan sits in third place after shooting a two-under-par 70.

"The competition has been fierce, with the top contenders displaying remarkable control and mastery over their game," noted a tournament official. The challenging par-72 course has already tested the field's abilities, with only three players managing to break par in the opening round.

Further down the leaderboard, Muhammad Shoaib (Gymkhana) and Saad Habib (DHA) share fourth place after posting matching 73s, while Salman Jehangir and Ameer Khawaja remain in contention with rounds of 74.

Running concurrent with the amateur championship, the Punjab Jinnah Development Tour for second-tier professionals sees Peshawar's Shahid Khan and Lahore Garrison's Tahir Bashir sharing the lead after shooting one-under-par 71s. Muhammad Sharif (Karachi Golf Club) and Kamran Khan (Gymkhana) follow closely with even-par 72s.

The championship continues Friday with the second round, as players vie for one of Punjab golf's most prestigious amateur titles.

A simple guide to snake plant care

A simple guide to snake plant care

Asher Butt

Urdu script at the bottom

Snake plants (now scientifically called Dracaena instead of Sansevieria) are one of the easiest houseplants to grow. Here's everything you need to know to keep them healthy!
Basic Care Tips
Watering

Water every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer
Water less often in winter (about every 3-4 weeks)
Always check if soil is dry before watering
Best way to water: Place pot in sink with water for 30 minutes, then let drain
Use room temperature water (rainwater is best, but filtered water works too)

Light

Can grow in any light conditions
Best in bright, indirect sunlight
Avoid harsh direct sun that can burn leaves
Can survive in low-light areas

Soil
Easy DIY soil mix:

3 parts regular potting soil
2 parts perlite
1 part sand or pumice
Optional: Add some charcoal for better drainage

Temperature

Likes temperatures between 60-85°F (15-29°C)
Keep away from cold drafts
Don't expose to temperatures below 50°F (10°C)

Signs of Problems
Underwatered Plant Looks Like:

Droopy or limp leaves
Brown, dry leaf tips
Bottom leaves turning yellow
Soft, squishy leaves

Overwatered Plant Looks Like:

Yellow leaves
Mushy, soft leaves
Bad smell from soil
Slow growth
Brown spots on leaves

Good to Know

Grows slowly - only 2-4 new leaves per growing season
Rarely needs repotting (every 2-3 years)
It can sometimes produce small, sweet-smelling flowers
Many varieties are available with different leaf patterns
Helps clean indoor air
Keep away from pets as leaves can make them sick if eaten
Naturally resists most plant pests

Simple Fixes for Common Problems

If overwatered: Remove from pot, cut off rotted roots, let dry, repot in fresh soil
If underwatered: Slowly add water to help soil absorb moisture evenly
For best growth: Feed with half-strength plant food in spring and summer only

Remember: Snake plants are very tough! It's better to underwater than overwater them. When in doubt, wait a few days before watering again.

We must follow suit by leveraging IOC programs and support from International Sports Federations to enhance the development of athletes in Pakistan,” he added.

Arshad Nadeem’s gold highlights year of mixed fortunes

The year 2024 witnessed a rollercoaster ride for Pakistan's sports enthusiasts, with moments of sheer brilliance and gut-wrenching disappointments across various disciplines. While challenges in cricket, hockey, football, and more tested the nation's mettle, a historic achievement by Arshad Nadeem at the Paris Olympics brought immense pride and a much-needed beacon of hope.

A golden moment in the Olympics

Arshad Nadeem etched his name in history, winning Pakistan’s first-ever individual gold medal in 40 years at the Paris Olympics with an Olympic record throw of 92.97 meters. His performance not only ended a 32-year medal drought but also placed him among the global elite in athletics. Nadeem’s extraordinary feat was the highlight of Pakistan’s otherwise underwhelming Olympic participation, where most athletes fell short of expectations.

Cricket: a year of contrasts

The cricketing year was marked by mixed fortunes. Pakistan secured notable ODI series wins, including a historic victory against Australia after 22 years and a first-ever whitewash of South Africa on their soil. However, these achievements were overshadowed by setbacks in other formats.

The Test side faced unprecedented challenges, including a first-ever series defeat to Bangladesh and a historic loss at home. The ICC T20 World Cup added to the woes, with Pakistan failing to advance beyond the group stages for the first time. The team’s inconsistency, leadership struggles, and poor form left fans yearning for better results.

Struggles in hockey and football

Hockey, Pakistan's national sport, continued its decline. The men’s team failed to qualify for the Olympics for the third consecutive time and fell short in key tournaments, including the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, despite glimpses of promise.

Football offered similar heartbreaks. The men’s team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup was a significant disappointment, though a historic win over Cambodia in the AFC qualifiers provided a rare silver lining. On the women’s front, the SAFF Women’s Championship highlighted the gap in competitiveness, with the team struggling against regional powerhouses.

Bright spots in snooker

Snooker proved to be a rare area of success. Veteran Mohammad Asif secured his third IBSF World Snooker Championship, while emerging talents like Mohammad Hasnain showcased Pakistan's potential on the global stage. These victories offered a glimpse of hope in a challenging year.

Looking ahead

Pakistan's 2024 sporting narrative underscores the need for investment in grassroots development, better infrastructure, and strategic planning. As the countdown to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 begins, and with renewed focus on international competitions, the country must channel its resilience to turn challenges into opportunities.

Arshad Nadeem's golden triumph remains the defining moment of the year, symbolizing the power of dedication and perseverance in the face of adversity.
