Hockey Legend Islahuddin honored with Pakistan's highest civilian award

Islahuddin, a true icon of Pakistani hockey, has received the nation's most prestigious civilian honor, the Nishan-i-Imtiaz. This recognition celebrates his illustrious career as a player, manager, and ambassador for the sport.

 

A Glittering Playing Career

 Islahuddin's achievements as a player are undeniable. He captained Pakistan to two World Cup victories (1971 & 1978) and a silver medal (1975).  He also secured an Olympic silver (1972) and bronze (1976), and led Pakistan to three Asian Games gold medals (one as captain).

 

Managerial Successes and Global Recognition

 Islahuddin's dedication to hockey extended beyond the playing field. He served as the national team manager for several periods between the early 1980s and 2007.  During his tenure, Pakistan achieved significant success, including a World Cup silver (1990), an Olympic bronze (1992), an Asian Games gold (1990), and an Asia Cup gold (1989).

 

His contributions were acknowledged internationally as well. He served as a member of the FIH rules board from 1993 to 2010, and the FIH bestowed upon him the prestigious "diploma of merit" - the only Pakistani to receive this honor.

 

A Night of Tributes and Inspiration

 A grand ceremony was held at the newly built Manzoorul Hassan Hockey Stadium in Lahore to celebrate Islahuddin's latest accolade. The event served as a reunion for hockey legends, with Olympic gold medalists, World Cup winners, and prominent figures from Pakistan's hockey scene in attendance.

 

The ceremony not only honored Islahuddin but also inspired the next generation of hockey stars. The presence of 30 trainees from the Defence Hockey Academy at the event was a testament to this.  Islahuddin's former teammates shared anecdotes, and he himself offered valuable advice, urging the trainees to seize the opportunity to revive Pakistan's hockey legacy.
