Punjab announces comprehensive sports system, 2024-25

Adviser to Chief Minister Punjab on Sports and
Youth Affairs Wahab Riaz and Director General Sports Punjab Dr Asif Tufail
unveiled a comprehensive sports system and the Annual Sports Calendar for
2024-25.
The sports initiatives include the Rustam Punjab Dangal,
Fastest Athlete of Punjab, and a series of stipends and prize money for
athletes.
The revelation was made in a press conference here at the
conference hall of the Sports Board Punjab here on Monday.
Rustam Punjab Dangal and Fastest Athlete of Punjab: The
Rustam Punjab Dangal is set to offer a prize money of Rs 40 lakhs, while the
Fastest Athlete of Punjab competition will allow participants through open
trials, with the winner receiving a stipend of Rs 70,000.
Annual Sports Calendar: A 2-year Annual Sports Calendar
for 2024-25 has been devised, featuring a range of major sports events to be
held at Nishtar Park Sports Complex. The calendar aims to boost the performance
of Punjab in national level competitions.
Division into U-16 and Professional Categories: The
program is divided into two parts - U-16 and professional. U-16 events have
already been held, with players selected at the provincial level receiving a
stipend of Rs 10,000. In the professional category, 18 sports disciplines will
be included.
Stipends for Athletes: Under the professional category,
athletes excelling in various sports will be awarded stipends in diamond, gold,
and silver categories. The stipends, ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 70,000 per
month for one year, aim to support and nurture young talent.
Coaching System: A level coaching system has been
introduced to produce top-level coaches in different games. Training is
initially provided to in-house coaches, and later, external coaches will be
invited to join the coaching system.
Sports Club Registration: A historic initiative involves
the registration of sports clubs in Punjab for the first time. Over 5,000
sports clubs from across the province have applied for registration,
contributing to the growth of a true sports culture.
Sports Endowment Fund: The province has a sports endowment
fund of Rs two billion, dedicated to awarding stipends and prize money. The
fund aims to reward and retain top athletes, providing them with opportunities
to participate in various games.
The initiatives are designed to prepare a roadmap for
young athletes in Punjab, nurturing their talent and guiding them to serve at
national and international levels. The comprehensive approach includes sports
events, stipends, coaching systems, and club registrations to foster a thriving
sports culture in the province.
