January 2026 - Featuring The Democracy Cup
Asher Butt
The 20th day
of the Lahore Winter Meeting presents seven races including the prestigious
Democracy Cup for four-year-olds over 1800 meters. After Day 19's complete
favorite whitewash (0 from 6), we approach this card with hard-earned lessons:
fade extreme topweights, target the 8-0 to 8-6 sweet spot, and respect tactical
positioning over traditional rail advantages.
RACE 1 -
Class VII Division VI & VII (Maiden) - 1000m - 12:00 Noon
Complete
Field (10 horses):
- Buraq (9-0), 2. Raees Sahib (9-0),
3. Fayyum (8-11), 4. Xena (8-11), 5. Piyari (8-8), 6. Abdullah Pasrur
(8-6), 7. Sea of Class (8-0), 8. Babbar Sher (7-13), 9. Bodrum (7-13), 10.
Lex Lugar (7-10)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: Piyari (8-8)
- Place: Lex Lugar (7-10)
- Fluke: Sea of Class (8-0)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: Piyari (8-8) - Post 5
- PLACE: Abdullah Pasrur (8-6) - Post
6
- FLUKE: Sea of Class (8-0) - Post 7
Analysis:
Complete agreement with the book on favorite! Piyari at 8-8 from post 5 sits
perfectly in the weight sweet spot (avoiding 9-0 curse) with tactical mid-pack
positioning. She finished 2nd on Day 18 from post 8, proving competitive form.
The better draw (post 5 vs 8) should improve her chances.
I'm
diverging on place selection: Abdullah Pasrur at 8-6 from post 6 finished 2nd
on Day 18 (also from post 2), showing consistent competitive form. The 8-6
weight is optimal, and post 6 in a 10-horse maiden provides clean racing room.
The book's Lex Lugar (7-10, post 10—widest draw) finished 3rd on Day 17, but
extreme outside positions in maidens are risky despite Day 19's wide-draw
success.
Sea of Class
gets agreement as fluke—at 8-0 from post 7, he sits in the weight range that's
been winning (8-0 to 8-6) with decent tactical positioning. Day 18 saw him
finish 2nd as predicted fluke in Race 1, proving he's competitive. If the two
9-0 topweights (Buraq, Raees Sahib) engage in speed duel, Sea of Class swoops.
Key Factor:
TWO horses at 9-0 (Buraq post 1, Raees Sahib post 2) virtually guarantees early
pace battle. After Day 19's evidence that 9-0 is unwinnable, both should fade,
allowing mid-weights like Piyari to capitalize.
Confidence
Level: HIGH - Multiple factors align (weight, form, positioning)
RACE 2 -
Class VII Division VI & VII - 1000m - 12:35 PM
Complete
Field (10 horses):
- Zaman Sahib (9-0), 2. Lucky Macs
(8-6), 3. Largess (8-4), 4. Emerging Star (8-2), 5. Self Belief (7-12), 6.
Lahif (7-10), 7. Pride of Chandrai (7-10), 8. I Shall Lead (7-10), 9.
Thunder Prince (7-8), 10. Silent Melody (7-8)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: Zaman Sahib (9-0)
- Place: Lucky Macs (8-6)
- Fluke: Emerging Star (8-2)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: Lucky Macs (8-6) - Post
2
- PLACE: Largess (8-4) - Post 3
- FLUKE: Emerging Star (8-2) - Post 4
Analysis: Major
disagreement with the book! They're backing Zaman Sahib at 9-0 from post
1—after Day 19's catastrophic 9-0 performance (0 wins, frequent failures), this
seems suicidal. Zaman Sahib finished 3rd on Day 18 Race 4, showing he's
competitive, but the 9-0 weight curse is undeniable.
Lucky Macs
at 8-6 from post 2 is my favorite—he finished 3rd on Day 19 at 9-0, proving
he's competitive even when overburdened. Dropping to 8-6 places him in the
optimal weight range with excellent positioning. The book agrees he's
significant (their place pick).
Largess at
8-4 from post 3 becomes my place selection—sitting perfectly in the 8-0 to 8-6
sweet spot with inside positioning. Post 3 in 10-horse fields avoids both rail
trap and wide journey.
Emerging
Star gets universal agreement as fluke—he won Race 1 on Day 18 at 8-6, proving
genuine quality. Now at 8-2 (even lighter!) from post 4, he's positioned to
deliver another upset if Lucky Macs and Largess don't dominate.
Key Factor:
Lahif (7-10, post 6) won Race 2 on Day 19 from post 11 as massive longshot.
He's dangerous at huge odds but too light (7-10) to be primary selection.
Confidence
Level: MEDIUM - Book backing 9-0 topweight concerns me, but consensus on
Emerging Star as threat is reassuring.
RACE 3 -
Class VII Division IV & V - 1000m - 1:10 PM
Complete
Field (10 horses):
- HaseebBarbarian's (9-0), 2.
Imperius (8-10), 3. Paddington (8-10), 4. Thunder Boy (8-6), 5. Rafah
(8-6), 6. Debate Princess (8-4), 7. Zindagi (8-4), 8. Red Chilly (8-4), 9.
Tomorrowland (8-0), 10. Safe Bet (7-10)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: Tomorrowland (8-0)
- Place: HaseebBarbarian's (9-0)
- Fluke: Red Chilly (8-4)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: HaseebBarbarian's (9-0)
- Post 1
- PLACE: Paddington (8-10) - Post 3
- FLUKE: Tomorrowland (8-0) - Post 9
Analysis:
The book is fading the 9-0 topweight again! Tomorrowland at 8-0 from post 9 won
Race 3 on Day 19 as an upset, proving current hot form. The book's confidence
backing him as favorite despite wide draw shows they trust recent performance
over traditional factors.
I'm taking
the contrarian position: HaseebBarbarian's at 9-0 from post 1 represents the
Haseeb stable that's been consistently competitive (finished 2nd Day 18 Race 3,
2nd Day 19 Race 5). While 9-0 has failed repeatedly, the Haseeb stable's form
provides hope. This is my riskiest selection.
Paddington
at 8-10 from post 3 finished 3rd on Day 18 Race 4, showing competitive form.
The 8-10 weight with inside positioning makes him solid place candidate.
Tomorrowland
is MY fluke (book's favorite!)—his Day 19 victory proves quality, but expecting
consecutive wins from wide draws (post 9) in different company is optimistic.
If he wins, it validates the book's bold call.
Red Chilly
(book's fluke) finished 2nd on Day 17 and 3rd on Day 18—consistent performer at
8-4 (optimal weight). Definitely capable of podium finish.
Key Factor:
This race pits my traditional (topweight with rail) vs. book's momentum-based
(recent winner) philosophy. One of us is spectacularly wrong.
Confidence
Level: LOW - Philosophical disagreement with book creates uncertainty.
RACE 4 - THE
DEMOCRACY CUP ⭐⭐⭐ (4YO) - 1800m - 1:45 PM
Complete
Field (7 horses):
- Daaku (9-0), 2. One Man Band (9-0),
3. Flash (8-10), 4. Sardar Bey (8-10), 5. Hall Road (8-4), 6. Nostalgic
(8-4), 7. Power Show (8-4)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: One Man Band (9-0)
- Place: Sardar Bey (8-10)
- Fluke: Daaku (9-0)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: Flash (8-10) - Post 3
- PLACE: Sardar Bey (8-10) - Post 4
- FLUKE: Hall Road (8-4) - Post 5
Analysis:
Fascinating book selections—they're favoring one 9-0 horse (One Man Band) while
calling another 9-0 horse (Daaku) a fluke! This suggests they see significant
quality difference despite equal weights.
I'm fading
BOTH 9-0 horses. Daaku won Race 7 on Day 18 at 8-12, showing quality, but the
9-0 curse remains unbroken. One Man Band finished 3rd on Day 18 Race 5
(Christmas Cup) at 9-0, proving competitive but unable to win with that burden.
Flash at
8-10 from post 3 is my favorite—optimal weight range with perfect tactical
positioning in this prestige 1800m test. The extended distance magnifies weight
advantages, making Flash's 4-pound concession to the 9-0 duo increasingly
significant.
Sardar Bey
at 8-10 from post 4 shares weight with Flash—both book and I agree he's major
player. In 7-horse race over distance, posts 3-4 provide ideal stalking
positions.
Hall Road is
my fluke at 8-4 from post 5—he finished 2nd on Day 19 finale at 8-0, showing
excellent form. The 8-4 weight over 1800m provides massive advantage (10 pounds
less than topweights). If the 9-0 horses set unsustainable pace, Hall Road
benefits.
Key Factor: 1800m
is the longest distance of the meeting. Weight differentials compound
exponentially—10 pounds over 1800m is far more significant than over 1000m.
Confidence
Level: MEDIUM-HIGH - Extended distance should favor lighter weights, validating
my strategy.
RACE 5 -
Class VII Division II & III - 1000m - 2:20 PM
Complete
Field (9 horses):
- Public Star (9-0), 2. Sarkar Raj
(9-0), 3. Kit Kat (8-10), 4. Samore City (8-10), 5. Khokhar One (8-10), 6.
Zohan The Thunder (8-8), 7. Deep Seek (8-2), 8. Seven Star (8-2), 9.
Haseeb Thunder (8-0)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: Haseeb Thunder (8-0)
- Place: Sarkar Raj (9-0)
- Fluke: Deep Seek (8-2)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: Kit Kat (8-10) - Post 3
- PLACE: Samore City (8-10) - Post 4
- FLUKE: Haseeb Thunder (8-0) - Post
9
Analysis:
The book is boldly backing Haseeb Thunder (8-0, post 9—widest draw) as
favorite, fading TWO topweights at 9-0! This reflects Day 19's lesson that wide
draws with lighter weights can win. Haseeb Thunder won Race 4 on Day 17,
proving quality, and the Haseeb stable's hot form continues.
I'm hedging:
Kit Kat at 8-10 from post 3 finished 3rd on Day 17 Race 6, showing competitive
form. The 8-10 weight with inside positioning seems safer than backing
widest-drawn lightweight.
Samore City
at 8-10 from post 4 shares weight with Kit Kat—in 9-horse sprint, posts 3-4
provide tactical sweet spots.
Haseeb
Thunder is MY fluke (book's favorite!)—if he wins from post 9 at 8-0, it
validates the book's aggressive momentum-based strategy. The 14-pound advantage
over Public Star/Sarkar Raj (both 9-0) is massive.
Key Factor:
Book backing Haseeb Thunder while making Sarkar Raj (9-0) their place pick
shows they're hedging—trust the Haseeb stable but acknowledge the 9-0 topweight
might place.
Confidence
Level: MEDIUM - Split between conservative (my picks) and aggressive (book's
picks) strategies.
RACE 6 -
Class VII Division II (Maiden) - 1000m - 2:55 PM
Complete
Field (15 horses - LARGEST FIELD!):
- Frankie (8-8), 2. Golden Choice
(8-8), 3. Moni Ki Chahat (8-8), 4. Crown Pharoah (8-6), 5. Green Card
(8-6), 6. Mayya (8-6), 7. Secret Lady (8-5), 8. Prince of Gujrat (8-4), 9.
Tez Tareen (8-4), 10. Waqat (8-4), 11. Shibra (8-3), 12. Chasing Eden
(8-3), 13. Awan Choice (8-3), 14. Asif Princess (8-1), 15.
PrincessBarcelona (8-1)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: Mayya (8-6)
- Place: Waqat (8-4)
- Fluke: PrincessBarcelona (8-1)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: Crown Pharoah (8-6) -
Post 4
- PLACE: Mayya (8-6) - Post 6
- FLUKE: Prince of Gujrat (8-4) -
Post 8
Analysis:
15-horse maiden sprint = pure chaos! Book backing Mayya (8-6, post 6) while I
favor Crown Pharoah (8-6, post 4)—both carry equal weight, decision comes down
to positioning.
Crown
Pharoah failed on Day 18 Race 6 from post 1 at 8-8, but weight relief to 8-6
and better draw (post 4 vs 1) should help. Mayya finished 3rd on Day 18 Race 7
at 8-8, also showing competitive maiden form.
Prince of
Gujrat is my fluke at 8-4 from post 8—mid-pack positioning in huge field allows
avoiding early chaos. The book's PrincessBarcelona (8-1, post 15—widest
possible draw) needs everything perfect to win from car park despite weight
advantage.
Key Factor:
15-horse maiden = absolute lottery. THREE horses at 8-8 (posts 1-3), SIX at
8-6, multiple at 8-4. This is dart-throwing territory.
Confidence
Level: VERY LOW - Largest field + maiden = unpredictability maximized.
RACE 7 -
Class VI Division I - 1000m - 3:30 PM
Complete
Field (5 horses):
- King Azan (8-12), 2. Dubawi's Angel
(8-12), 3. Luna Afzaal (8-6), 4. Sher Khan (8-0), 5. Golden Heart (8-0)
BOOK
PREDICTIONS:
- Favourite: King Azan (8-12)
- Place: Dubawi's Angel (8-12)
- Fluke: Luna Afzaal (8-6)
MY
PREDICTIONS:
- FAVOURITE: King Azan (8-12) - Post
1
- PLACE: Dubawi's Angel (8-12) - Post
2
- FLUKE: Sher Khan (8-0) - Post 4
Analysis:
Perfect agreement with book on top two! King Azan at 8-12 from post 1 in tiny
5-horse finale is straightforward favorite. He finished 2nd on Day 17 Race 6,
showing quality. Dubawi's Angel at 8-12 from post 2 won Race 4 on Day 17,
proving she's legitimate contender.
Our fluke
disagreement: Book favors Luna Afzaal (8-6, post 3), I favor Sher Khan (8-0,
post 4). Both concede significant weight to the 8-12 topweights. Sher Khan won
Race 7 on Day 17, proving current form, while Luna Afzaal finished 2nd on Day
18 Race 9 (also as my place pick).
Key Factor:
Tiny field (5 horses) means fundamentals matter—topweights with inside draws
should dominate unless they lack class. This is the day's most predictable
race.
Confidence
Level: HIGHEST - Small field, clear weight/position advantages, recent form all
align.
COMPARATIVE
PHILOSOPHY ANALYSIS
BOOK'S
APPROACH (Aggressive Momentum):
- Consistently fades 9-0 topweights
(only backs them once—One Man Band Race 4)
- Trusts recent winners regardless of
draws (Tomorrowland, Haseeb Thunder)
- Willing to back wide-drawn horses
(Lex Lugar post 10, Haseeb Thunder post 9)
- Focuses on 8-0 to 8-6 weight range
MY APPROACH
(Balanced Traditional-Modern):
- Selectively respects 9-0 topweights
when stable form is exceptional (HaseebBarbarian's)
- Prioritizes tactical positioning
(posts 2-6) over extreme outside
- Targets 8-4 to 8-10 range as
optimal
- Balances recent form with
positioning advantages
AGREEMENT
AREAS:
- Race 1: Both favor Piyari, both
identify Sea of Class as threat
- Race 2: Both recognize Lucky Macs
and Emerging Star as key players
- Race 7: Complete agreement on King
Azan/Dubawi's Angel top two
DISAGREEMENT
AREAS:
- Race 3: Book backs Tomorrowland
(recent winner), I back HaseebBarbarian's (topweight)
- Race 4: Book backs One Man Band
(9-0), I fade both 9-0 horses
- Race 5: Book backs Haseeb Thunder
(widest draw), I back Kit Kat (inside position)

- Hall Road (Race 4) - Lightweight
over distance
- Haseeb Thunder (Race 5) - Stable
form + wide draw success pattern
Races to

Agreement
Rate: 2/7 (29%)
This low
agreement reflects fundamentally different philosophies:
- Book: Aggressive momentum-based,
fading topweights, trusting wide draws
- Me: Balanced approach respecting
positioning, selective topweight backing
The
Democracy Cup (Race 4) will be decisive—Book backs 9-0 topweight, I fade both.
Whoever's right gains validation for their entire philosophy.
