Former PCB chairman advocates for increase in Test match fee
By our correspondent
Former Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Khalid Mehmood, has advocated for an increase in the Test match fee for national cricketers. He expressed concern that without a higher match fee, players might lose interest in Test cricket, leading to more retirements.
Khalid Mehmood emphasized the growing allure of league cricket due to substantial payments, with players being inclined towards formats like T20 where they have to bowl only four overs. He stressed that to retain players' interest in Test cricket, an increase in financial incentives is necessary.
Highlighting the financial disparities, Khalid Mehmood questioned why top officials of the cricket board receive high salaries while players are not provided with increased remuneration. He argued that if money is generated through the efforts of players, they should receive a more significant share.
Drawing attention to past instances where players like Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz quit Red Ball Cricket, and Haris Rauf faced consequences for not participating in Tests, Khalid Mehmood suggested that penalizing players may not be an effective solution. Instead, he recommended raising players' fees as a strategy to discourage them from opting out of Test cricket.
