Naqvi vows to overhaul Pakistan cricket amidst ongoing struggles

Naqvi vows to overhaul Pakistan cricket amidst ongoing struggles

-primroses to bring out concrete evidence in terrorism incidents

Asher Butt

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reaffirmed his commitment to reviving Pakistan cricket following the national team’s humiliating defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test of the ongoing series.

Pakistan’s loss by 10 wickets in Rawalpindi has sparked widespread criticism, but Naqvi remains determined to address the longstanding issues plaguing the team.

The loss to Bangladesh marks a low point in Pakistan's cricket history, with the team enduring one of its worst performances in recent years. Former cricketers, including Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez and several others, voiced their frustration, particularly criticizing the team’s decision to play four fast bowlers on a traditionally spin-friendly pitch. Afridi termed it "unacceptable" that the team management failed to read home conditions accurately.

Despite the backlash, Naqvi maintained that addressing the root causes of the team’s decline requires a comprehensive and long-term approach. He noted that the problems in Pakistan cricket have been festering for the past three years, emphasizing that immediate solutions are not feasible without careful planning and execution.

Speaking at a press conference here, Naqvi acknowledged the national team’s poor state, admitting that the team’s performance has been declining consistently. However, he assured the public that the PCB is actively working to fix these issues. “We are implementing measures to rectify the situation. You will definitely see improvements in due course,” Naqvi said.

He further added, “I don't possess a magical solution to instantly resolve the situation. But we are working on strategic changes to uplift Pakistan cricket. Remember my words, things will not remain the same, and a lot is happening in the background.”

Naqvi also addressed calls for his resignation, stating that he had no intention of stepping down until meaningful changes are made. “People wanted me to leave after two days, but I’m here to fix Pakistan cricket. I will not bow to external pressures,” Naqvi asserted.

Naqvi emphasized that the upcoming Champions Cup will serve as a critical opportunity to identify and develop new talent. He underscored the importance of a merit-based selection process to ensure that only the most deserving players represent Pakistan at the international level. Additionally, he stressed the need for proper backup players who can step up when required.

“We need to ensure that our selection processes are transparent, and players are chosen based on merit. The Champions Cup will be a key opportunity to nurture and promote young talent, which will help us rebuild for the future,” Naqvi said.

The PCB chairman acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in light of the poor recent performances. However, he expressed confidence that with the right resources and planning, Pakistan cricket can regain its stature. He highlighted the importance of addressing the issues at their root, comparing the process to surgery: “Proper tools are needed to carry out the necessary ‘surgery’ to fix Pakistan cricket. It can’t be done overnight, but we are on the right path.”

Naqvi also revealed that a report on the pitch conditions for the first Test against Bangladesh has been requested and will help inform future decisions. He noted that while it is natural for a team to experience highs and lows, it is crucial to analyze the causes of failure and work towards consistent improvement.

As Pakistan cricket navigates through these turbulent times, Naqvi called for unity and support from fans, former players, and stakeholders. “Criticism is part of the game, but what we need now is constructive dialogue and support. We all want to see Pakistan cricket thrive, and together, we can achieve that.”

With the Champions Cup on the horizon, all eyes are on the PCB and its ability to deliver on these promises. The tournament will be closely watched as a potential turning point for Pakistan cricket, offering a glimpse into the future of the sport in the country.

The PCB chairman’s resolve to fix the ongoing issues in Pakistan cricket represents a glimmer of hope for the fans and the nation. However, only time will tell whether the promised changes will materialize and restore Pakistan cricket to its former glory. As the team prepares for the second Test against Bangladesh, the pressure to perform and the desire for a resurgence loom large at the team as well as the PCB.

-promises to bring out concrete evidence in terrorism incident

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has emphasized that the incidents of terrorism in Balochistan will be thoroughly investigated, and the facts will be presented with concrete evidence.

Address a press conference here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday, he stated that these acts of sabotage are part of a larger conspiracy aimed at destabilizing Pakistan, with the enemy trying to create chaos and anarchy under a premeditated plan.

Naqvi praised the timely action taken by security forces and law enforcement agencies, which led to the elimination of 12 terrorists. He expressed solidarity with the families of the martyrs who lost their lives in these tragic events and reassured the public that efforts to maintain peace in Balochistan are being intensified.

The Interior Minister made it clear that the determination of the Pakistani nation cannot be shaken by cowardly acts of terrorism. He reiterated that the fight against terrorism will continue until it is completely eradicated. Naqvi also hinted that those responsible for orchestrating the unrest in Balochistan are known and that the security forces will respond effectively.

Naqvi underlined that the terrorists involved in the recent attacks are not angry Balochis, but rather extremists with different agendas. He assured that the attackers would be dealt with appropriately, and the security forces remain in constant communication with the Balochistan government to ensure that peace and stability are maintained.

Arshad secures spot in javelin throw final at Paris Olympics

Arshad secures spot in javelin throw final at Paris Olympics

Asher Butt

Pakistan's star athlete, Arshad Nadeem, has qualified for the final round of the Men's Javelin Throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. With a remarkable first-attempt throw of 86.59 meters, Nadeem easily surpassed the qualifying mark of 84 meters, securing his place among the top twelve competitors.

Nadeem's qualification comes as a beacon of hope for Pakistan, as he is the nation's last remaining contender for a medal at the Olympics. The country has been eagerly anticipating a medal since the 1992 Barcelona Games, where Pakistan secured a bronze in field hockey.

The javelin throw final is scheduled for August 8, where Nadeem will face stiff competition from world-class athletes, including India's Neeraj Chopra and Grenada's Anderson Peters, who also qualified for the final.

Pakistanis are now rallying behind Nadeem, hoping he can replicate his previous successes and bring home a coveted Olympic medal. His silver medal at the World Championships and gold at the Commonwealth Games have set high expectations, and the nation is eager to witness another historic moment in Pakistan's sporting history.

Pakistan sent a total of seven athletes and six of them have been out of their respective events. The 27-year-old is Pakistan’s last and biggest hope for a medal in the Olympics.

This marks Nadeem's second consecutive Olympic final, following his impressive fifth place finish in Tokyo. The medal round of Javelin Throw will be played on August 8 at 11:25pm Pakistan Standard Time (PST).

Nadeem won a silver medal at the World Championship last year meanwhile in the Commonwealth Games 2022, he won the gold medal, becoming the first Pakistani athlete since 1962 to win gold at the competition, with a massive throw that covered 90.18 metres distance.

It is worth mentioning here that Arshad Nadeem is Pakistan’s last hope for a medal in the ongoing Paris Olympics as all of their remaining athletes have been knocked out of the medal race.

Pakistan last won a medal in the Olympics during the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona, however, Arshad is hopeful that he will once again bring the glory to the country.

“I’m fit and well-prepared and I’ve worked really hard for this prestigious event,” he said and added: “I feel I can achieve my goal of winning a medal.”

“Arshad Nadeem has qualified for the final round with a throw of 86.59 meters,” Multan Sultans, a cricket franchise sponsoring Nadeem at the Paris Olympics, wrote on social media platform X.

“Congratulations Arshad Nadeem!“

It would be Pakistan’s first individual medal since Hussain Shah’s bronze in Seoul (1988) and the first-ever medal for Pakistan in athletics.

Pakistan’s performance at Paris Olympics

Barring Arshad, no Pakistani athlete even made it past the first round at the Paris Olympics. Their sprinter, Faiqa Riaz, was the best athlete of the remaining six, finishing sixth in 100m heat 2. Meanwhile, swimmer Muhammad Ahmed Durrani was their worst performer, ending 25th in the 200m freestyle.

England rejects hosting PSL 10 playoffs, final

England rejects hosting PSL 10 playoffs, final

Asher Butt

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has faced a setback in its plans to hold the playoffs and final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 in a foreign country. England, initially considered a frontrunner, on the desire of the franchise owners, for hosting the marquee matches, has declined the offer.

According to PSL sources, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) cited scheduling conflicts as the primary reason for turning down the PCB's proposal. With the English cricket calendar already packed, they were unable to accommodate the PSL matches.

The PCB is now exploring alternative venues for the playoffs and final. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a potential option, but the scorching summer temperatures in May pose a significant challenge.

The decision to hold the PSL playoffs abroad was made in an effort to enhance the league's global appeal and provide a more neutral venue for the final. However, the development would spoil the works for the PCB.

Meanwhile, the franchise owners remain dissatisfied with their share of profits from the ninth edition and have demanded an early governing council meeting to address their concerns.

The PCB is under pressure to find a suitable venue for the PSL playoffs while also resolving the issues raised by the franchise owners.

Bangladesh tour of Pakistan in jeopardy

Asher Butt

The upcoming Pakistan-Bangladesh Test series is facing uncertainty due to the deteriorating political situation in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has delayed the departure of its 'A' team to Pakistan by 48 hours, casting a shadow over the entire tour.

Originally scheduled to arrive in Islamabad on Wednesday, the Bangladesh 'A' team was set to play two four-day and three one-day matches. However, the BCB cited "unforeseen circumstances" for the delay.

In a bid to salvage the series, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has extended an offer to the BCB to send their Test team to Pakistan earlier for training purposes. The PCB believes this could help mitigate any potential disruptions caused by the ongoing political unrest.

While the PCB remains optimistic about the series proceeding as planned, the situation remains uncertain. Both cricket boards are in constant communication to assess the situation and make necessary adjustments to the tour itinerary.

The Pakistan-Bangladesh Test series is scheduled to begin on August 21, with the first match in Rawalpindi followed by the second in Karachi. The fate of the series hangs in the balance as the cricket world watches the developments closely.

PSL franchise owners call for an independent board

PSL franchise owners call for an independent board

Franchise owners of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have called for the establishment of an independent board to oversee the league's operations. Nadeem Omar, chairman of the Quetta Gladiators, has been particularly vocal about the need for a separate governing body dedicated solely to PSL affairs. In a statement he said that he believes an independent board would enhance efficiency in decision-making and allow for a more focused approach to the unique challenges faced by the PSL.

Omar highlighted the complications arising from the current structure, where the PSL's management falls under the broader umbrella of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He noted that the busy schedule of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi often necessitates dealing with Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, which can delay addressing issues directly. "If we have a separate chairman for the PSL, we can discuss issues directly and resolve them more quickly," Omar asserted.

The recent adjustments to the PSL schedule, necessitated by the upcoming Champions Trophy, have added another layer of complexity. The new timeline has led to an overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL), raising concerns about the availability of foreign players who may prioritize the IPL over the PSL. In light of these challenges, Omar mentioned that there was even a proposal to continue the PSL without foreign players if necessary.

"We had to take this risk because there was no available window after April," Omar explained, noting the constraints faced in scheduling. He expressed concern over a perceived decline in player enthusiasm, contrasting the current situation with the passionate commitment observed during the league's first four editions.

Omar also linked the performance of the Pakistan national team in the upcoming Champions Trophy to the potential impact on the PSL's value. A strong showing could enhance the league's reputation and draw greater interest from players and fans alike.

“As the debate over the governance of the PSL continues, the franchise owners' push for an independent board reflects a desire for a more streamlined and autonomous management structure. Such a move could potentially address the unique operational needs of the league and help it navigate the competitive landscape of international T20 cricket.”

'We are here to deliver': PCB Chief hits back at critics

'We are here to deliver': PCB Chief hits back at critics

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi Monday hit back at his critics, saying he is here to deliver and is least bothered about what his detractors think of his knowledge about the game.

In a candid and assertive media briefing, Naqvi addressed critics questioning his knowledge of cricket, emphasizing his commitment to reforming and revitalizing Pakistan's cricket system. Naqvi, a businessman-turned-politician and the current Federal Minister for Interior, made it clear that he is focused on delivering results rather than engaging in debates about his qualifications.

Responding to a journalist's question regarding his understanding of cricket, Naqvi said, "Time will tell how much I know about cricket, but we are here to deliver. I don't care about what people say, but you will see the results."

An official of the PCB stated: “This statement reflects Naqvi's confidence in his leadership and vision for Pakistan cricket.

“Naqvi's tenure as PCB chairman has been marked by a series of significant initiatives aimed at overhauling the domestic cricket structure. He announced the formation of a six-member advisory board, headed by former Pakistani cricket legend Waqar Younis, to oversee all cricket-related matters. This board will also include five other former stars who will head the newly established domestic teams.

The PCB's new domestic structure, set to commence next month, will feature five teams with 30 players each. These teams will compete in the Champions tournaments, which include first-class, 50-over, and T20 matches.”

Naqvi stressed that these changes are designed to eliminate favoritism and ensure that talent is the primary criterion for selection. "I am bringing in former stars to vet and improve the cricket system and end this culture of personal likes and dislikes," he stated.

Each team will be managed by a reputable former cricketer, who will have a three-year mandate to develop and deliver results. The support staff for each team will include around ten professionals, including coaches and analysts. The inclusion of contracted players in these tournaments, when available, is also part of the plan to elevate the standard of domestic cricket.

Waqar Younis, present at the press conference alongside PCB's Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, expressed his support for the new system. He highlighted the importance of maintaining high standards in domestic cricket to enhance Pakistan's international performances. "Cricket remains our product, and we have to play good cricket to maintain our brand. All rest comes later," said Waqar.

The PCB's ambitious plan includes organizing a total of 261 matches across all formats during the 2024-25 season, including 131 first-class games, 40 50-over matches, and 90 T20 fixtures. This comprehensive schedule is part of a broader strategy to provide ample opportunities for players to showcase their talents and prepare for international competitions.

In conclusion, Mohsin Naqvi underscored his determination to bring substantial changes to Pakistan's cricket landscape. By institutionalizing the new domestic structure within the PCB constitution, he aims to create a lasting legacy that prioritizes merit and performance. Naqvi's message was clear: Pakistan cricket is poised for a transformation, and he is confident in his team's ability to deliver results.

Champions T20 Cup: December 21, 2024 - January 2, 2025

Champions First-Class Cup: May 28 - August 5, 2025

Each team will consist of around 30 players, including centrally contracted and top-performing domestic players. The PCB aims to involve 150 players, divided into three categories with monthly retainers of PKR 550,000, PKR 400,000, and PKR 250,000, respectively. This marks a significant increase from the previous season's contracts, which ranged from PKR 50,000 to PKR 300,000, informed the PCB officials.

Each team will have a mentor, potentially a former Pakistan cricket legend, alongside a dedicated coaching staff, including head coaches, batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, and support personnel. The mentors will play a pivotal role in nurturing young talent and bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket.

The PCB also plans to establish dedicated Regional High Performance Centres in Faisalabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Sialkot. These centres will serve as training and practice facilities for the teams.

The PCB is making substantial financial investments to improve the domestic structure. This includes enhanced match fees for players: PKR 200,000 for red-ball cricket, PKR 125,000 for 50-over matches, and PKR 100,000 for T20 matches. These fees are a significant improvement from the previous season's payments.

Each team will also have a corporate sponsor and media partner, alongside additional revenue streams from broadcast and live-streaming rights, event title sponsorships, ground branding rights, and ticket sales.

Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the necessity of these tournaments, stating, "Our current standings—sixth in Tests, fourth in ODIs, and seventh in T20Is—do not reflect the true potential and legacy of Pakistan cricket. To restore our rightful place at the top of world cricket, we must innovate and strategically enhance, expand, and strengthen our domestic structure."

Naqvi expressed optimism that the Champions tournaments would provide players with an environment that mirrors international cricket's intensity, thus better preparing them for global competitions. He added that the PCB's efforts would focus on nurturing the next generation of cricketing stars, providing them with ample opportunities to showcase their skills and climb the ranks within Pakistan's cricketing ecosystem.

“The introduction of the Champions tournaments represents a bold step towards revitalizing Pakistan's domestic cricket. With enhanced financial incentives, a comprehensive support system, and a focus on international-level competition, the PCB is poised to create a more robust and competitive domestic cricket landscape. This initiative is expected to pave the way for Pakistan to reclaim its position as a dominant force in world cricket.”

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Raza Naqvi announced on Monday that major upgrades are underway for stadiums in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi in preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2024, scheduled for February. The event will feature the eight best teams from around the world.

During a press conference, Naqvi addressed concerns about efforts to undermine Pakistan's hosting of the tournament. "Some elements wanted the Champions Trophy not to be held in Pakistan," he stated, reaffirming the country's commitment to hosting the prestigious event. “Pakistan is firmly ready to organize the Champions Trophy 2025,” he made it clear.

Naqvi detailed the extensive renovations, highlighting the involvement of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) in demolishing outdated structures at the stadiums. He assured that the construction of the new facilities would be completed within five months, ensuring they meet international standards. The upgrades are part of the ICC-approved budget for the Champions Trophy, demonstrating the international body's support for Pakistan as a host.

In addition to the stadium upgrades, Naqvi announced plans for building a five-star hotel near the PCB headquarters. A unique feature will include a tunnel connecting the hotel to the stadium, providing safe and convenient access for players. This initiative aims to enhance security and comfort for participating teams.

Furthermore, Naqvi revealed plans for a modern stadium in Islamabad, expanding the infrastructure to accommodate future international cricket events.

The press conference, also attended by Waqar Younis, adviser to the chairman on cricket affairs, provided updates on the latest developments and initiatives undertaken by the PCB. Both officials emphasized the board's dedication to improving cricket infrastructure in Pakistan and ensuring a successful Champions Trophy.

“The PCB's efforts reflect a broader vision to not only host a successful international tournament but also to leave a lasting legacy of world-class cricket facilities in the country. The upgrades and new constructions are expected to significantly boost Pakistan's standing as a premier destination for international cricket,” said the PCB chief.
