Nafay's breathtaking 60 runs in 31 balls, accompanied by Akeal Hosein's steady contribution, ensured Quetta's triumph. Lahore Qalandars, despite putting up a fighting total, couldn't contain Quetta's determined batting lineup.

Earlier in the match, Lahore Qalandars, opting to bat first, faced an early setback with the dismissal of Fakhar Zaman in the third over. Despite a cautious start, they found themselves on the backfoot as Sahibzada Farhan and Rassie van der Dussen aimed to stabilize the innings. However, Quetta Gladiators, with bowlers like Akeal Hosein, Mohammad Husnain, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Wasim, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to restrict Lahore's progress. Hosein, in particular, showcased his spinning prowess with figures of 2/17.

Major governance restructuring: PCB shifts to Prime Minister's control

Major governance restructuring: PCB shifts to Prime Minister's control

By our correspondent

In a significant development, the governance structure of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has undergone a fundamental transformation, with the PCB now operating directly under the control of the Prime Minister's Office. The decision to shift the PCB out of the domain of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) was announced by the caretaker federal government.

The PCB, being the governing body for cricket in Pakistan, will now report directly to the Prime Minister's Office. The Prime Minister, in his capacity as the Patron-in-Chief of the board, will directly oversee its matters.

With this transition, the PCB is no longer answerable to the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC). This move signifies a departure from the previous governance structure and grants the PCB a newfound autonomy.

The Secretary of the IPC will no longer be a member of the PCB Board of Governors. This marks a clear shift from the previous composition and reduces the Ministry's direct involvement in the cricket board's decision-making processes.

The decision comes at a time when the PCB is undergoing significant changes, including the recent election of Mohsin Naqvi as the Chairman of the PCB. Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as the Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, was elected unopposed as the 37th chief of the PCB. His election followed the resignation of Zaka Ashraf as PCB chairman.

Zaka Ashraf's departure from the position of Chairman of the Management Committee was followed by the appointment of Shah Khawar as the election commissioner of the Cricket Board. The restructuring and reform within the PCB are viewed as steps toward enhancing governance, transparency, and efficiency within the cricketing body.

The decision to bring the PCB directly under the Prime Minister's Office is seen as a bold move to streamline the governance of cricket in Pakistan and align it more closely with the highest echelons of the government. The PCB's autonomy and restructuring are expected to have far-reaching implications for the administration and development of cricket in the country.

Both teams are entering their second match of the tournament, with Lahore Qalandars eager to bounce back after their opening-match loss to Islamabad United.

The Qalandars find themselves in a challenging position this season due to the absence of star leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury. Additionally, England all-rounder Dan Lawrence is unavailable for the majority of the season as he is part of the Test squad in India.

On the Quetta Gladiators' side, they will miss the services of Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga in the initial part of the season due to national duty. Bismillah Khan has been named as Hasaranga’s partial replacement.

The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, known for high-scoring encounters, is expected to set the stage for a thrilling battle. A par score in Lahore is around 175, and both teams boast strong bowling attacks.

For Lahore Qalandars, Sikandar Raza emerges as a compelling captaincy choice for this crucial encounter. Raza has been in exceptional T20 form over the past three years, showcasing his prowess with both bat and ball.  A thrilling encounter on cards at MCS today

Multan aim for a sturdy start, Karachi seek redemption

By our correspondent

MULTAN: The excitement of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 after its opening ceremony and first encounter at Lahore, now simultaneously moves to the city of saints, as Multan Sultans prepare to face Karachi Kings in the third match of the season. The day-night encounter is scheduled to take place at the Multan Cricket Stadium on February 18 (today).

In their previous encounters, both teams have faced each other 11 times, with Karachi Kings holding a slight edge with six victories, while Multan Sultans secured five wins.

Multan Sultans have been a consistent force in recent PSL seasons, reaching the finals in each of the last three editions. Led by wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan, the team boasts local talents like Yasir Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Khushdil Shah. International batsmen Dawid Malan and Reeza Hendricks add strength to the squad.

However, Multan Sultans face challenges in the absence of key seamers Ihsanullah and Reece Topley, who withdrew from the tournament due to injuries. Chris Jordan and Shahnawaz Dahani are expected to lead the new-ball attack, supported by spinners Usama Mir and Faisal Akram.

On the other hand, Karachi Kings aim for an improved performance after finishing in the bottom two in the last two seasons. The team strengthened its middle order with the inclusion of quality all-rounders Kieron Pollard and Daniel Sams. Experienced players like Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Nawaz provide depth.

Opening with Shan Masood and James Vince, Karachi Kings look for quick runs during the Powerplay. The pace attack faces a setback with Jamie Overton's withdrawal due to injuries, increasing the responsibility on Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza. The spin department, featuring Tabraiz Shamsi and Arafat Minhas, adds strength to the lineup.

The team winning the toss is likely to opt for batting first. The Multan pitch generally supports batting with good pace and bounce. An average first-inning score of around 175 indicates favorable conditions for batsmen, but the pitch can become tricky in the second half.

Clear weather with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius is expected in Multan. Despite the potential absence of international stars, Multan Sultans hold a slight edge with a stronger batting line-up and home-ground advantage.

For Multan Sultans, Mohammad Rizwan is in good form after Tests against Australia. Rizwan adds flexibility to the top order. As of Kings, Shan Masood, is a hard-hitting batter capable of taking on bowlers from the first ball. While Mohammad Amir is a fiery fast bowler. Amir showcased excellent form in the International League T20.

Runners-up in the previous edition, Mohammad Rizwan was the top run-scorer with 550 runs, and Abbas Afridi took 23 wickets. But Karachi failed to qualify for playoffs in the last edition as Imad Wasim top-scored with 404 runs, and Mohammad Amir took 10 wickets.

As Multan Sultans aim for a strong start under home conditions, Karachi Kings seek redemption. As it is the start of season nine, there is an expectation of a thrilling encounter.

Peshawar Zalmi likely to come strong against Quetta Gladiators today

Peshawar Zalmi likely to come strong against Quetta Gladiators today

Asher Butt

LAHORE: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 is set for an action-packed Sunday doubleheader, with the first match between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi here at the Gaddafi Stadium, providing an early opportunity for both teams to secure a win in the tournament.

The second match of the day will witness a face-off between Mohammad Rizwan's Multan Sultans against Shan Masood's Karachi Kings at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

In their last five meetings in the PSL, Peshawar Zalmi secured four wins against Quetta Gladiators' one victory. Zalmi dominated the Gladiators with four consecutive wins until the lone defeat in March 2023.

Peshawar Zalmi, aiming for their second PSL title, boasts a strong track record with a tournament win in 2017 and three runner-up finishes. Key developments in their camp include the recruitment of West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph, replacing England's Gus Atkinson. The team is also excited about the addition later of England batter Daniel Mousley, a promising talent with experience in the International League T20 in the UAE.

The Gladiators, winners of the 2019 PSL title, have faced group-stage exits in the past four seasons, raising questions about their current form. Under new captain Rilee Rossouw, they aim for a resurgence, supported by West Indian batter Sherfane Rutherford. Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga adds strength to their lineup.

The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, the venue for this match, has seen the team winning the toss opt to bat first in the last three T20Is. With a trend of winning by the team batting first in recent matches at this ground, the toss-winning team is likely to choose to bat.

The Gaddafi Stadium has witnessed relatively high-scoring matches, with recent first-innings totals of 163, 192, and 182 in T20Is. A competitive first-innings score is expected to be around 170-plus, and spin might play a crucial role. Gaddafi Stadium typically features batting-friendly pitches, and the match is expected to witness high-scoring encounters. Pacers may find opportunities to claim wickets, and an average score of around 161 runs indicates a competitive T20 environment. Lahore's weather on match day is forecasted to be hot and humid, with no rain expected.

In the back drop of conditions and team lineups, Peshawar Zalmi is viewed as in a stronger position to win against Quetta Gladiators. With impressive batting resources, Zalmi looks well-prepared for the competition. In contrast, Quetta's bowling department may face challenges.

Babar Azam, leading Peshawar Zalmi, needs to deliver impactful performances. With a strong batting lineup, including Rovman Powell and Saim Ayub, Peshawar aims to secure victory against Quetta Gladiators in Lahore.

Under the leadership of Rilee Rossouw, Quetta Gladiators must play exceptional cricket to overcome their recent record. The head-to-head stats favor Peshawar Zalmi, making it a challenging encounter for Quetta.

Out of 21 matches played between Quetta and Peshawar, Zalmi has secured 12 victories, while Gladiators won nine matches. The history suggests Peshawar's dominance in their encounters.

Finished at the bottom in the previous edition, Quetta will rely on players like Will Smeed and Mohammad Nawaz. Their recent track record raises questions about their performance. Whereas, with a strong team in the previous edition, Peshawar Zalmi reached the Second Eliminator. Key players include Mohammad Haris and Salman Irshad, contributing to the team's success.

Teams:

Peshawar Zalmi: Babar Azam, Rovman Powell (both Platinum), Saim Ayub, Tom Kohler-Cadmore (all Diamond), Mohammad Haris (Brand Ambassador), Aamir Jamal (both Gold), Khurram Shahzad (Silver), Haseebullah Khan (Emerging), Asif Ali, Naveen-ul-Haq (partially unavailable), Umair Afridi, Dan Mousley, Gus Atkinson, Mohammad Zeeshan, Lungi Ngidi (Waqar Salamkheil), Mehran Mumtaz, Noor Ahmad (replaced by Gus Atkinson), Salman Irshad, Arif Yaqoob, Shamar Joseph (partial replacement for Gus Atkinson), Arshad Iqbal (partial replacement for Khurram Shahzad), Luke Wood

Quetta Gladiators: Rilee Rossouw (Platinum), Mohammad Wasim, Jason Roy, Wanindu Hasaranga (all Diamond), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Brand Ambassador) Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Hasnain (all Gold), Mohammad Amir, Will Smeed (Silver) Saud Shakeel, Sajjad Ali, Usman Qadir, Adil Naz, Khawaja Nafay, Akeal Hosein, Sohail Khan, Omair Yousuf, Sherfane Rutherford, Bismillah Khan (partial replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga), Sufiyan Muqeem

Former PCB chairman advocates for increase in Test match fee

Former PCB chairman advocates for increase in Test match fee

By our correspondent

Former Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Khalid Mehmood, has advocated for an increase in the Test match fee for national cricketers. He expressed concern that without a higher match fee, players might lose interest in Test cricket, leading to more retirements.

Khalid Mehmood emphasized the growing allure of league cricket due to substantial payments, with players being inclined towards formats like T20 where they have to bowl only four overs. He stressed that to retain players' interest in Test cricket, an increase in financial incentives is necessary.

Highlighting the financial disparities, Khalid Mehmood questioned why top officials of the cricket board receive high salaries while players are not provided with increased remuneration. He argued that if money is generated through the efforts of players, they should receive a more significant share.

Drawing attention to past instances where players like Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz quit Red Ball Cricket, and Haris Rauf faced consequences for not participating in Tests, Khalid Mehmood suggested that penalizing players may not be an effective solution. Instead, he recommended raising players' fees as a strategy to discourage them from opting out of Test cricket.
