LRC Winter opener defies form book as all races deliver major surprises

The first Winter Meeting of the Lahore Race Club produced one of the most unpredictable cards of the season, with all seven races delivering results that upset pre-race calculations.

Four outsiders—Midnight Grace, Ghazal, Dogar Choice and Emerging Star—registered surprise victories, while three runners regarded mainly as place chances—Queen Of Pharoah, Dawood Prince and Construct Craft—converted their opportunities into wins. The outcome underlined the competitiveness of the card and the danger of relying only on favourites in short-distance races.

The meeting featured seven events named in honour of Pakistan’s 1965 war heroes, including recipients of the Nishan-e-Haider. The Lahore Race Club’s programme included races commemorating Captain Colonel Sher Khan Shaheed, Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed and Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed.

Midnight Grace Starts the Shockwave

The opening Captain Colonel Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) Cup set the pattern for the evening when Midnight Grace produced a superb run to win in one minute 2 and 4/5 seconds.

Midnight Grace had not been among the leading public selections, yet finished strongly to claim the opener. Talent Again, another surprise performer, took second place, while Roxy completed an unexpected top three.

The result immediately indicated that the card would be difficult for pundits, as none of the widely anticipated leading runners featured in the principal positions.

Ghazal and Dogar Choice Extend Upset Trend

The surprises continued in the Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed Cup, where Ghazal emerged as an upset winner.

Tatla One performed close to expectations by taking second position, but Bilal One produced an unexpected effort to secure third place. Ghazal’s victory reinforced the message from the opening race that runners with overlooked form or improving fitness could not be ignored.

The third event, the Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed Cup, produced the third consecutive upset. Dogar Choice outpaced the field to win, while Sea Of Class—also not among the principal public fancies—finished second.

Messi, considered a fluke entry before the race, completed the top three. The result showed that the form line was not translating as expected on the day, and that the pace and race positioning may have played a bigger role than pre-race reputation.

Queen Of Pharoah Turns Place Chance into Victory

In the Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed Cup, Queen Of Pharoah changed the pattern slightly by turning a place-contender status into a winning performance.

Rather than merely challenging for a minor position, Queen Of Pharoah led the field home with an assured run. Sher Khan finished second in another surprise result, while Public Star claimed third place.

The race demonstrated that the evening was not solely about rank outsiders. Well-regarded place chances that received the right trip and found the correct racing position were also capable of defeating more heavily supported rivals.

Dawood Prince Makes Early Lead Count

Dawood Prince produced a front-running success in the Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Cup, winning in one minute 12 and 2/5 seconds.

Classed mainly as a place aspirant before the race, Dawood Prince seized an early advantage and maintained the lead to the finish. The performance highlighted the value of early position and race control, particularly in contests where rivals struggle to settle or make up ground late.

Bella Two produced a surprise effort to finish second, while favourite Pakiza had to settle for third position. Pakiza’s failure to convert favouritism into victory was another example of the meeting’s unpredictable nature.

Construct Craft Delivers in Sixth Race

The Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed Cup saw Construct Craft produce another notable victory for the place-contender category.

Construct Craft covered the race in one minute, outpacing the field to claim the sixth event. The horse’s performance suggested that it was better suited to the day’s conditions than several more fancied rivals.

Favourite Bellatrix was pushed into second place, while Sher-e-Niaz Baig emerged as an unexpected third. The result further damaged the record of favourites and confirmed that the card had become a difficult one for conventional form analysis.

Emerging Star Completes Dramatic Finale

The final event, the Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed Cup, completed the evening’s series of surprises when Emerging Star emerged as an upset winner.

Safe Bet exceeded expectations by finishing second, while favourite Be A Man had to settle for third place despite galloping well. Emerging Star’s victory ensured that the meeting ended in the same fashion in which it began—with an outsider defeating the leading selections.

What the Results Suggest

The seven-race card was a reminder that horse racing is shaped by more than pre-race labels such as favourite, place chance or outsider. Form can matter, but it is only one part of the equation.

Several factors may have influenced the results:

• Horses that secured a clean early position appeared to gain an advantage.
• Place contenders delivered stronger-than-expected performances.
• Favourites struggled to impose themselves at decisive stages.
• The day’s pace pattern may have suited runners capable of leading or racing prominently.
• A crowded and competitive field may have made it difficult for highly rated horses to obtain a smooth passage.

The fifth race was a clear example. Dawood Prince seized the initiative early and maintained it, while favourite Pakiza could not improve beyond third. Similarly, Construct Craft’s success in the sixth race showed that a runner given a positive trip could defeat a better-fancied rival such as Bellatrix.

Lesson for Future Race Cards

The Winter Meeting opener has effectively “burnt the books” of race pundits. None of the seven races followed a straightforward favourite-driven script, and the card demonstrated the importance of evaluating more than headline form.

For future Lahore Race Club meetings, observers may need to pay greater attention to recent track work, handicap position, gate draw, rider-horse combination, race pace and a horse’s ability to settle quickly.

The opening Winter Meeting will be remembered for its unpredictability, with four shock winners and three place contenders turning their chances into victories. It was a night when the outsiders and overlooked runners seized the spotlight, leaving favourites and pre-race assessments behind.
